Latest Nielsen ratings indicate old friends are best friends for television audience years as "The Andy Griffith is seven; NBC's "The Wonderful World of Disney" on the networks for 16 years, and CBS' "Beverly Hillbillies," eight. The younger crowd in the Nielsen elite group includes "Family Affair," four, and Glen Campbell's variety hour, two. A bit farther down the list there are "Here's Lucy," starring a performer who has been on television for 18 years, and "My Three Sons" which started 10 years back. leading the list a week ago and in show position this time, is probably a source of pride and embarrassment to CBS executives. Only a couple Happenings of horror NEW YORK (AP) Television this season seems to be proving, if nothing else, that old friends are best friends.

In the most recent national Nielsen ratings lists, every one of the 10 most popular TV series is at least two years old- and six have survived for six or more years. The report, covering shows broadcast between Oct. 27 and Nov. 2, is typical of the season's showing. NBC's "Laugh-In" is in first place and is two years old.

A close second is CBS' "Red Skelton Show," age 19. Third is now 15. Then there is NBC's "Bonanza," 10; CBS' "Mayberry, R.F.D., which, if you count its ONE MONSTER to appear in person in the 5- Happenings of Horror stage and screen show at the Clinton theatre is this version of Frankenstein's monster. The show will appear at the Clinton for a full week, starting Wednesday. Mancini launches Philadelphia Pops Maj.

Henry J. Higgenson founded the Boston Symphony in 1881. But in order to get good European musicians to come to play in Boston, and to give these musicians something to do in the Boston Symphony's off season, the summer, Higgenson founded the Boston Pops in 1886. The German conductor Fritz Scheel founded the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1900. RCA Victory, which used to record the Boston Symphony but now has signed the Philadelphia, has brought forth the Philadelphia Orchestra Pops in 1969.

The first record by the Philadelphia Orchestra Pops is just out- composed, arranged and conducted by Henry Mancini. It's "Beaver Valley '37," a 15- minute description of three scenes from Mancini's teen years in Aliquippa, Pa. As recording( of part 1 began on the stage of Philadelphia's Academy of Music last June, a listener could tell, without reading program notes, that it was about the bank of a peaceful river. Sure enough, notes say that an after-supper diversion was a leisurely stroll along the Ohio River Bank. Section 2 is entitled "Black Snow" and has a cold-sounding melody with a steady beat of work.

It paints a picture of snow covered with cinders and soot from steel mills and coal stoves. Section 3, "'The Sons of Italy" depicts Mancini playing flute in the Sons of Italy Band at an outdoor festival and ends with a bright tarantella. Mancini would like to see his musical Americana choreographed as a ballet. He says "This orchestra is made for a pops situation because it sings. Every section has a beautiful voice of its own.

As a composer, that's where it is; when you write you have to have something to write for. My only apprehension was the reaction to the piece. It's the first extended work I've ever done and the first time I've written for the concert stage. Everything else has been for TV, records or movies. But we played it at a concert and it went over well." Mancini adds, "I'm still a deadline writer.

I haven't done anything without a deadline for so long I don't know what it is like. When I started this I was also involved with two movies and a record album. What I did was to just shut everything else out for a month and concentrate on writing this music." "This music," also includes DEAN'S of seasons back the show was abruptly canceled-not so much for inadequate numbers of viewers but because many of them were older and nonurban. There were loud howls of rage, a blizzard of mail and "Gunsmoke" was reprieved. It was moved out of its late time spot and, with some of its raw action removed, became more popular than ever in an early evening time period that attracted a young family audience.

In the current ratings, only one new show, Bill Cosby's situation comedy, has stuck like a burr in the top 20 shows. But Cosby can hardly be counted a new face in TV after those "I New York If Gerry Dorsey, or Arnold George Dorsey, the singer, had opened the other night at the Americana Royal Box, nobody would've given a damn. But Engelbert Humperdinck opened to huge excitement Bob Hope was there, Red Buttons, too, announcing his wife's expecting again. Gerry Dorsey's manager borrowed "Engelbert Humperdinck" out of the dictionary 4 or 5 years ago, figuring it was good enough name for the composer of "Hansel Gretel," it was good enough for him. Today's "Engel" as he calls himself, or "Engela, is being sued by the family of the original Engelbert Humperdinck family for taking over a famous name in music.

The funny part to me is that Gerry Dorsey's making Humperdinck's name more famous than Humperdinck ever made it. You don't think so? Ask five people "Who wrote 'Hansel Gretel'?" The first four will say "Hansel and Gretel Who?" and the fifth will say "Jacqueline Susann." "Engy" is the sexiest singer to come along since Tom Jones and may be more powerful. Inordinately courteous, handsome, 6 feet a little lofty, quite British Army in manner, 32 years old, thin-waisted, animallike in his stroll, very kind to little old ladies who want to kiss him, he even went for a semi-striptease (actually only down to his shirt) that scared some of his fans who were afraid he was, or wasn't going to go further. You will be hearing that he is the greatest new voice of our decade (could be!) and that without changing his name from Dorsey to Humperdinck, he'd never have made it. "My manager (Gordon Mills) liked the way it rolled off his tongue," Engelbert Humperdinck said.

"I owe a lot to that name. I do not want to say that it was not important to me because it was. There must be hundreds of talented people trying to get someplace who are looking for something. I was just one of those fortunate enough to find something." "Engelbert," who got about $100 a week as Gerry Dorsey, can make about $50,000 a week now as Humperdinck. What's in a name? As Shakespeare never quite got around to saying, sometimes a bloody fortune.

Shapely singing star Joyce Bryant has really come back. She gave up being a sexpot "Love for Sale," "Satin Doll" DeMARS HOTEL six short pops pieces, including "Strings on "Cameo for Violin" and Delight," which are on side two of the "Beaver Valley '37" album. Twenty-eight mikes were used in the Academy of Music during the recording. Technicians and equipment were squeezed into a small parlor full of ornate furniture and pictures and guiltframed mirrors. One of the control boards gave a man control of the volume of each individual mike.

In the balcony sat four reverberation boxes, looking like big wooden hi fi speakers. They were designed to capture certain frequencies that the Academy of Music is considered to make too "dry" and to bounce them back toward the stage. A concert hall in which sounds reverberate relatively briefly is considered "dry." Halls where sounds reverberate for a relatively long time are called "juicy." Some halls, like the Academy of Music, are considered too dry for certain pitches and acceptable for others. 200 W. WATER ST.

NBC, incidentally, jumped back in the lead in the weekly averages, building a 19.7, to CBS' 18.9.

ABC followed with 15.4. Although CBS and ABC plan to replace their weakest shows at midseason, it seems likely now that NBC will stick with its original entries through the winter although there may be some reshuffling of time spots.
