BRUCKHEIM Tribune Media Services QUESTION: When I had a great deal of pain in my toe, my wife insisted that I had gout, and made me see the doctor. After his exam and a lab test, including sticking a needle in the painful he told me I had "false gout." He prescribed some ibuprofen and sent me home. My wife is still telling me she was right all along, but I think it was just arthritis.

ANSWER: Stick with your position that it's arthritis, and you can't be wrong, for both gout and pseudogout (which is what I think your doctor was referring are made of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD). And while pseudogout served as a diagnosis for many years, because of the constant search for exactness, CPPD crystal deposition disease is now replacing the older term. A prescription of ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is appropriate for the diagnosis of pseudogout. In true gout, NSAIDs also may be used, but colchicine can provide a dramatic reversal of an acute attack.
