Today's Problem The following problem involves many principles studied in plane geometry. The student should verify the truth of all ideas which might occur to him in (so solving) the problem, and not assume the truth because a diagram or sketch makes it appear to be true for that particular case. "A gear wheel is broken and Ihe largest piece remaining is less than a semi-circle. To replace the wheel, it is necessary to determine Ihe diameter ol the original wheel. The longest chord (AB) is mea- sured on the broken wheel and found lo be 16 inches.

The per- pendicular distance from Ihe cen- ter (D) of the chord AB to the circle (gear wheel) is measured as 5 inches. Find the diameter of the gear wheel." Answer tomorrow. SOLUTION TO YESTERDAY'S PROBLEM It Ls first assumed Ihat (here are essentially two unknowns in Ihe problem, namely, Raymond's age and Joyce's age. It is con- venient to allow a letter to stand for this unknown facl, and in this problem could represent Ray- mond's present age and could represent Joyce's present age. Now we analyze the problem in search of two equations since we arc using two unknowns.

We soon discover that the first sentence will be our first equation, and the second sentence will be our se- cond equation. What two things are equal in Ihc first sentence? "II I were tlirce-fifths as old as I am" can he represented by three-fifths "and Joyce were only three quarters as old as she is" can be represenled by three- fourths J. "We would be three older together lhan I am alone" indicates Ihat il we add three-fifths and three-fourths together the sum will be 3 more than (I am alone). To make a statement of equality, however, we cannot add 3 to three-fifths plus three-fourths but rather, subtract it. We now have a state- ment on the left of Ihe equal sign (thrce-Iiflhs plus three-fourths minus 3) which is equal lo R.

Tic second sentence is analyzed In the same manner resulting in two-fifthsR and one-halfj repre- senting ihe 2 individual's ages and now their sum is 3 less than (3 years younger). Hence, to make a statement on the left of the sign which will equal we must add the 3, or obtain Iwo-fLfthsR plus one-halfj plus 3. This, then, is equal lo R. Now lhe.se (wo equations are soKvd for and Ihe result 15 obtained. Liveth" was sung by Mrs, Robert Beehler.

Bruce Hartman sang "The Holy City:" Their accom- panist was Mrs. Floyd Cyphers, pianist for the service. Bulletins for Iho service were donated by Mrs. a Hawkes nnd Mrs. Ann Hawkes Hutton.

Ushers lyere James Possinger, John Field, Barry Bond and Wayne Bond. The offering will be used for Lutheran World Action. This was the 21st year that the Easter Dawn service was spon- sored by the Crusaders of St. John's Lutheran Sunday School. Lancastf Cattle I.ANCASTKll.
