THE MANSFIELD NEWS-JOURNAL THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1937 PAGE TWENTY Recalls Toledo Battle Henry Claims It Provided Him With Greatest Grid Thrill. EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the second of a series of articles about W. F. (Pete) Henry, former football star at W. J.

Henry was a member of the famous Canton Bulldogs at the time. The Mansfield boy remembers the game distinctly because the Bulldogs defeated the Toledoans to annex the national pro title. Another game which stands out vividly in Henry's memory is the Yale team which W. J. whipped, 16 to 7.

Deefating Yale in those days was quite a feat. But the game of games for Henry was played against Toledo Waite in his senior year at Mansfield high school. There was nothing unusual about the game, Mansfield winning, 31 to 7, but Henry will never forget it because it was the first victory every scored by the high Waite, which had thumpings administered, previous meetings. By OSCAR RUHL Nimadournal Sports Editorial Highlight of Season. game was the highlight of THIS season in which Mansfield suffered only one defeat to compile one of the greatest gridiron records in the school's history.

Henry captained this team, which scored victories over Greenwich, Galion, Mt. Vernon, Oberlin, Shelby, Bucyrus and Ashland, in addition to Waite and lost only to Wooster, 9 to 0. While the 1914 season is regarded as one of the most successful, the year was one of the previous, although Henry, playing his first full season in the backfield, played sensational ball. Mansfield's only victories in 1913 were scored over Crestline, Medina and Galion. Although great fullback in high school, Henry converted into a lineman by Coach Bob Falwell in his first year at Henry was only 15 when he entered the Washington, school, tipped scales at 195 and played as a freshman.

However. so intensive is his schedule about the country that he could not be secured for another engagement here.

He has been signed to appear in the world's championship lightheavyweight tournament, which is now being staged here, and will oppose George Becker, talented young New Yorker, a two out of three falls match with an hour and a half time limit Monday. Mephisto is the ace of them all when it comes to ring color and personality. He cloaks himself in an aura of mystery. Twice in his career has he been world's champion and only recently he lost the world's lightheavyweight championship to the man who now holds it, Billy Weidner of San Francisco. Matchmaker Nolan is now endeavoring to line up another bangup match to co-feature next Monday night's card.

A total of 13 jump balls were required in the Kenmore game. The new rule has eliminated rough play incidental to the center tip, eliminated held balls following the tip, developed a more smooth, continuous type of play, equalled ball possession to a certain extent and added additional playing time. However, it is also noticeable that the game is somewhat rougher, and demands more stamina in the player because of the continuous play. It also places a bigger burden on the defense. Higher scoring will naturally result as more actual playing minutes have been added to the game.

The game has been changed so completely that it already has been proposed that hockey substitution rules be adopted. In hockey, substitutions are permitany time in any number without the formality of reporting to the officials. Buffalo Signs Steve O'Neill Ex- Indian Named Pilot and Business Manager.
