It was dertaken by the local societies with considerable hesitancy, as they feared that 'the great distance, which most of the societies from abroad would hare to travel, (would make the attendance small. The result, however, was an agreeable surprise to them, as well aa to the visitors. The attendance was very large, and the performance satisfactory in every particular. Yesterday forenoon Mr. Spencer Field, who was found On the levee head of Lafayette street last Friday night between rreight piles, suffering from a rract ure of toe akull and several wounds on his head, recovered sufficiently to be removed to toe New Orleans Sanitarium, on St. Joseph street.

MISDEEDS AND MISHAPS. MONARCH IN TROUBLE. Yesterday Mr. Fred Slntes, proprietor of the saloon corner of Julia and Camp streets, swore out an affidavit against the builder, H. J.

Monarch, charging him with obtaining money under false pretences. It appears that a few days ago Monarch entered Mr. Slntes' saloon and had a $100 bill changed. He returned later and requested the bartender to cash which wai The as found paid his debts and that Mr. Slntes was advised to make an affidavit against him which be did.

OVERHEATED. Yesterday morning, at about 8:45 o'clock, at the corner of Pitt and Robert streets, a negro named Benny Hurry, residing at the corner of Valence and Chestnut streets, while working for the gas company, was prostrated by the heat. The body was recovered by a man named George McLaughlin.
