Bechtel official speaker Port Clinton Kiwanians learned about Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station west of Port Clinton, when M.R. Stephens of the Bechtel Corporation spoke to them at the Wednesday noon dinner meeting.

The meeting was held in the Seafare Room. Art Soderberg presided at the meeting. Announcements included the Beef Barbecue by Richard Stein, chairman this year, who said that the barbecue would be held September 10 and will be held at East Harbor State Park. Paul Moon reported on the Scholarship Fund and said the club has between $12,000 and $15,000 in the fund, much of which is out on loans. Eight members will go to Granville July 20 for a District golf tournament and on August 23 several members will go to Windsor, Canada, for an inter club.

Luther Heiserman introduced Stephens, who gave members an idea of the size of the area plant and also other information concerning the manner in which it works. He said that floor space of the plant is 365,000 square feet, equivalent to the floor space of 10 average size schools. The cooling tower which will be 493 feet high, equivalent to twice the height of the Toledo Edison Building has a ground area inside the tower of 160,000 square feet, equivalent to the area of football fields. Toledo Edison and the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company believe the DavisBesse station will be indispensable, if we are to meet the ever-increasing electrical needs of the people of northern Ohio. Instead of burning fossil fuel, heat is produced by nuclear fission occurring within the reactor.

The need for more electric power is made necessary by the growth of Northern Ohio, when more electrical demands must be met, due to more industries and the upgrading of control systems in municipalities. Stephens resides in Oak Harbor. He is a graduate of the University of Denver where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. He is Project Construction manager of the area plant. The project is the largest in Ottawa County.

1026 persons are employed there. The Bechtel Corporation is the largest in the world, employing 50 to 60,000 employees. Guests were Bob Ream, guest of Al Manton. Other visiting Kiwanians were Park Cridge of Pampano Beach, Rollin Gratop, Cairo, Ill. and George Patterson of Northern Columbus.
