In exchange for the VFW giving the armory to Bassett's, Bassett's will help build a new VFW hall for its members.

Baumgartner told council that the group realizes that the property is private -meaning that the village has no authority on what VFW decides to do with its property. The group, nevertheless, wanted council to know its position. "The VFW hall is a piece of Oak Harbor history, said Baumgartner. "We're hoping public opinion will make them (VFW members) reconsider." She said the petition will be Continued From A-1 "Anytime the plant shuts down, we regard it as serious," said Rick Kelly, a spokesman for Toledo Edison Co. which operates the facility.

"But in terms of public safety or anything like that, it wasn't serious at all." Meanwhile, an anti-nuclear group on Tuesday claimed that a new report shows that safety problems still plague the plant, contradicting plant officials who said most of the problems have been corrected. A report by Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project said there were nearly 3,000 mishaps at U.S. nuclear reactors in 1986. Public Citizen is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization founded by Ralph Nader, the consumer activist. The report said Davis-Besse had a number of safety problems last year even though Toledo Edison spent $180 million on repairs.

"They spent a whole lot of money saying they got everything fixed up and their management is super great now, and that they have no more said Alice Hirt, a spokeswoman with the Toledo Coalition for Safe Energy. "I think this report points up to the presented to VFW members at their next meeting. Council didn't take any position on the matter. In another matter, Police Chief William Paulsen asked that council consider developing an ordinance which would require that all vehicles parked on private property be licensed. Paulsen said the police department has received calls on the unlicensed vehicles.

He said about 25 unlicensed vehicles are parked on private property in the village. The issue was referred to the safety, emergency and refuse committee. Other items were acted on and discussed at the meeting. Council approved a request from the Gordon Lumber Co. to waive the requirement that a sidewalk be constructed, on the north side of Park Street until the land is developed.

Question and answer periods on the proposed tax levy issue are scheduled for Sept. 30 and Oct. 14 from p.m at Oak Harbor High School. fact that there are continuing problems, that very little has changed despite the repairs." Kelly disputed the findings of the report. "We've spent $180 million to fix the plant," Kelly said.

"That's not to say you won't have periodic problems like faulty circuit boards. But there never has been a safety problem at Davis-Besse. Anti-nuclear groups like Public Citizen spend an awful lot of time talking about things that have never happened in this country at a commercial nuclear Public Citizen's report said inspections at Davis-Besse last year revealed "overdue safety equipment maintenance, a lack of maintenance documentation and the incorrect installation of safety The report also said that during training sessions on electrical wiring, instructors discovered that workers may have been installing the wiring incorrectly, and that the wiring may have been improperly spliced and insulated. In addition, the motor that controls the flow of both backup cooling systems failed, the report said, because "the motor was not designed for the environment in which it was being used." Shop. Fri.
