BY TOM HOEPF Sports Editor WILLARD Danbury Coach Jim Rinaldo opened his scorebook, pointed to the 25 points penciled by Hiedi Gast's name and said: "That's experience." His all-state senior guard hit nine of 15 field field goal attempts and seven of eight free throws to the Laker's to a 60-45 victory over Ashland Crestview and their second straight Class A sectional championship Saturday.

Danbury heads into the district tournament with a 22-0 record. Crestview ended the season at 11-11. The Lakers, ranked 6th in the state, take on 8th-ranked Mansfield St. Peter Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Willard High School.

St. Peter, last year's state runner-up, crushed Colonel Crawford 50-32 Saturday to win its sectional tournament. The Spartans, who defeated Danbury in the opening game of the district tournament last year, have a 17-5 record. Crestview stayed close for one quarter before the Lakers outscored them 18-9 in the second. LeAnn Monak made two free throws with 6:07 left in the second period to put the Lakers ahead 14-10.

Then sophomore Jeanene Sauvey came off the bench and hit a 15-footer from the left side with 5:32 to play. Junior Patty Howell came into the game and hit one from the side for a 24-15 lead with 1:35 remaining. Teresa Ontko hit a jump shot from the wing as time ran out for a 28-17 lead. "Howell looked like she's been with us all year. That's our depth," said Rinaldo.

"We're solid off the bench. That was the key." Howell, a junior recently promoted from the junior varsity, scored four points and had five rebounds while filling in for ail-district forward Diane Gresh. Gresh was limited to nine points and eight rebounds as the Lakers' junior went tooth and nail with Crestview's Pam Conley. Gresh got into foul trouble in the first half and eventually fouled out late in the game. Conley, a 5-10 sophomore, muscled in 22 points to lead the Courgars.

Sherri Bond, a sophomore guard, scored 10 points. Danbury junior Teresa Ontko picked up the slack left by Gresh's rare scoring lapse by tossing in five field goals for 10 points. The Lakers snapped a three-game shooting slump by making 23 of 46 field goals for 50 percent. They were 14 of 16 from the free throw line. Yet Rinaldo was concerned about his team's offense.

"We seem to have lost that mid-season offensive punch," he said, adding that the defense kept his Lakers comfortably ahead. "I wasn't worried because we were shutting them off. You could see they weren't going over the 40s." The Lakers will need all the offense they can muster against St. Peter," said Rinaldo. "Mansfield lives on defense," he said.

Two scoring spurts, one in each half, got Lakota past Oak Harbor.

The Raiders, 20-2, went on an 11-1 run at the end of the first half after Oak Harbor had closed to a point, 15-14. In the third quarter, Oak Harbor pulled back to trail 35-30 before a 13-6 spurt gave Lakota a 48-36 lead with 3:11 to play. "They have talent and quickness," Lakota Coach Dave Worstein said about Oak Harbor as he summed up the game, "and that helped them break our press some but we still had a couple of spurts off the press and they were important. "We stay with our press during the game and it wears people down and we got those spurts because of it." "They hurt us with the press, especially just before the half," Rockets Coach Tom Quinn said. "The press plus Gretchen Platzke picked up her third foul and Carol Macko had to leave the game when she chipped a tooth just before halftime.

"That forced us out of a 'triangle and 2 defense and into a '2-3'," Quinn continued, "and they scored three quick buckets against that defense."
