lose, 11-7, to Calvert TIFFIN Port Clinton's baseball team dropped another game, in the process of committing seven errors, this time to Tiffin Calvert, 11-7. Port Clinton is now 4-12 overall. Larry Smith, in his first pitching start for the Redskins, took the loss. He pitched 3 and one-third innings, allowing nine runs, seven hits, two walks and striking out three. Bill Cipiti came on in relief and worked 2 and two-third innings, giving up two runs, six hits, one walk and fanning one.

The Redskins led, 7-5, after the top of the fourth inning, but Calvert came back to score four in their half and two more in the sixth to ice the game. In the fourth, after one out, Port Clinton's John Williamson walked, Rick Ward singled and both advanced a base on a passed ball. Smith then doubled them home. Dan Timmons followed with a walk and Smith and Timmons executed a double steal. Mike Matta then tripled them across.

Marioneaux, who averaged 24.6 points and 15.5 rebounds per game his senior year, was the Royals fifth round draft choice. He was signed Tuesday. A spokesman for the Royals said they are "hoping he can play some defense.

He seems to be able to do everything else." The Royals, who failed to make the National Basketball Association playoff this year, depended mainly on the fore -court attack. Trainer believes Citation would beat Canonero II A I home to Fenway Park. "I was shaking inside I had goose bumps. I was surprised. didn't expect it." Slim Jim responded to the acclaim with three hitless innings as Boston wiped out a 3-2 lead on Rico Petrocelli's three-run homer in the seventh.

McDowell, despite his wild-ness, had a no-hitter through sue innings. But Cleveland Manager Alvin Dark insisted McDowell wasn't going the route no-hitter or not. Sudden Sam suddenly lost his "classic" by giving Joe Foy a single leading off the seventh. Dark moved in a hurry to replace McDowell with reliever Vince Colbert. "Foy hit a terrible pitch," said McDowell, who won his first game as a starter this year.

"I threw terrible pitches all night and got away with it. I pitched a terrible game." In the other American League games, Baltimore beat New York 6-2; California turned back Minnesota 3-2 and Oakland trimmed Milwaukee 5-2. Rain postponed Chicago at Kansas City. Lonborg, the former ace of the Red Sox pitching staff, had nothing but trouble after the 1967 World Series. First he broke his leg in a skiing accident, then developed a chronic sore arm and was finally dismissed to the minors last year, He pitched his way back to Boston from Louisville with a hot early start this season.

While Lonborg was working his magic, the Red Sox' bats came alive in the seventh on a single by Reggie Smith and double by Carl Yastrzemski before Petrocelli's clout. Colbert held Washington to one run in his three-inning relief stint as McDowell gained his second victory in seven decisions, one of his slowest starts in years. The other triumph was in relief. Paul Blair sailed the first pitch of the game into the right-center field seats and Brooks Robinson unloaded a tie-breaking two-run homer in the fourth in the Baltimore success. Mike Cuellar beat New York for the eighth time in nine decisions since coming to the American League.

Tom Murphy scattered eight hits and won his first game since April 7 as California stopped Minnesota. Murphy, who had lost five straight since winning his first decision last month allowed only two outfield putouts. Four of the Twins' hits failed to leave the infield. Jim "Catfish" Hunter fired a three-hitter for his seventh straight victory and Rick Monday, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando ripped home runs as Oakland trimmed Milwaukee. Hunter struck out nine and held the Brewers hitless in every inning but the fourth and ninth.

Campbell taking second on the throw home. Bob Skilliter came up with a walk to load the bases, and with two outs, junior Jerry Schriefer hit a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence, a 340-foot grand slam. It was the first slam in the history of Genoa high school. The Comets will play Toledo Libbey at Toledo today, then take on NLL foe Rossford in the finals of the Pemberville District Thursday. "He was capable of two or three moves in a race and could kill you in an eighth of a mile." Jones emphasized he was not downgrading Canonero II. "He's a pretty fair horse who has shown he can come from behind or run on the lead. It's just that up to now I wouldn't think he belongs in the same class as Citation." Jones saw both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and will be on hand for the Belmont. Told that Johnny Campo, trainer of Jim French and Good Behaving plans to run both in the Belmont, Jones commented that it would be "hard to set a trap for Canonero." Jones noted that the Belmont has been "a killer of potential champions.

There's been many an upset. As of now I think Canonero II would win, but you never know what will happen." Perhaps he had in mind how Citation, the 1-5 favorite, stumbled at the start of the 1948 Belmont, but fortunately recovered and went on to win by eight lengths in 2:28 1-5. He is listed as a probable starter Thursday.

Meanwhile, Casper returns to action after an absence of sev- era! weeks dating back to the first round of the Greater New Orleans Open.
