Young said Tuesday the major factor in the Republican victory in Ohio in the Nov. 8 election was "an anti Catholic hate campaign which spilled over into Ohio from Indiana." Ohio gave Vice President Richard M. Nixon about 270,000 more votes than Sen. John F. Kennedy.

Indiana also voted Republican in the national election, but put a Democrat in the governor's seat. "The Ku Klux Klan always has been strong in Indiana," the Ohio Democrat said in an interview. "I have received many letters and propaganda sheets concerning the election which I have sent to Senator Kennedy," he said. Young was critical of suggestions that Kennedy should compromise his liberal programs because of his narrow victory. "Don't forget that both Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson were minority presidents," Young said.

"You might as well suggest that Kennedy serve as president for six months and Nixon serve the other six months of the year." The junior senator from Ohio came here to begin a series of conferences with Democratic leaders concerning patronage expected in the new administration. He also wrote all of Ohio's Democratic county chairmen asking them why they felt the Republicans carried Ohio. Young said he had talked with many of the candidates for various offices in Ohio and "they bear out my thoughts concerning the anti-Catholic propaganda and President Eisenhower's appearance."
