Fuller said main roads, like U.S. 35 and U.S. 23, were wet and slushy, while secondary roads tended to remain snow-covered.

"As soon as they would get done (plowing secondary roads), snow would come back. Luckily, throughout the day, it didn't drop below freezing, so we didn't run into an ice situation," Fuller said. However, Franks said the temperature was expected to drop to the mid-20s overnight, so freezing was a concern. In fact, most area schools canceled today's classes on Sunday night and the Ohio State Highway Patrol issued a Level One Snow Emergency in Ross, Pike and Vinton counties. Fuller said crews planned to work through the night and into this morning to keep roads as clear as possible.

Franks said the snow was expected to taper to flurries by 2 a.m. today, then temperatures should start to rise. It is expected to remain cloudy today with a high in the upper 20s, then clearing tonight with lows in the upper teens. Tuesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 30s. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy with lows in the mid-20s, and rain showers are expected Concern through minefields.

Every day is serious," she said. "When he does get to come home, I turn right back into the mother of a teenager. He's responsible for other people's lives, while all of his friends back here are going to basketball games and riding fourwheelers and hanging out." Lawhorn decided to postpone her Christmas celebration until her son returns. She is hoping he will come home in April the scheduled end of his deployment so she can plan a spring-time Christmas bash and celebrate his safe return. "I'll be the house with the tree and all the lights," she said.

The last phone call from Joseph was Dec. 29. While he couldn't provide too many details about his whereabouts or activities and the call lasted only 15 minutes, Lawhon said it was comforting to hear his voice. She said she misses the everyday interaction with her son and is still trying to come to terms with the fact that his life is in danger daily. But strangely, seeing news coverage of the fallen soldier Friday brought her some peace.

"When I saw that soldier's family on TV, I knew that could've been my son. But I also know there is nowhere he would rather be, and a calm came over me. "I'm extremely proud of him. He sent a letter to his 4-year-old cousin and told him not to be afraid because he's over there to protect us, from the monsters. And his cousin went to his mom and said, I'm not afraid, because Joe is taking care of us." Lawhorn doesn't know when she might hear from her son again, but the two have devised a plan to stay connected, if only in Clarification Inadvertently omitted from the obituary of Russell M.

But snow will possibly return to the area Wednesday night and could continue on and off through the latter half of the week, Franks said. Accidents abound While kids slipped and slid on the flood wall in Yoctangee Park, cars made their way relatively smoothly through city Sunday afternoon. But travelers didn't fare as well on the county roads and outlying state routes. The Ross County Sheriff's office reported at least nine weather-related fender benders between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

All available troopers at the Chillicothe post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol were on the road responding to several injury accidents in the evening. No information on those accidents was available at press time because so many accidents occurred at once, a dispatcher said. A two-vehicle collision on Valley Road sent four people to the Adena Regional Medical Center. According to sheriff's reports, Robert Newton, 44, of 911 Valley Road, was driving south on that road while Murrell Colburn 58, of 1580 Valley Road, was driving north. Both vehicles reportedly slid on the snow-covered road and then collided.

Newton was taken by a Pike County squad to Adena. One of Colburn's passengers, 77-year-old Martha Newberry of 88 Ohio 772, was transported by a Huntington Township Squad. His other two passengers, Hunter Kellough, 5, of 1091 Valley Road and Heather Fields, 4, of 1521 Nigpen Road, were taken to Adena by their mothers.
