On one level this is your standard, computer-animated tale of a brilliant boy who keeps inventing things, sometimes disastrously. Beyond that, however, there's an offbeat wit that shows that clever grown ups are involved in this TV version based on the Oscar-nominated movie. John A. Davis created the "Jimmy Neutron" movie and this series; Steve Oedekerk, a standup comic, is producer. Their show has a fun look midway between futuristic and standard suburbia.

Some of the voices are overdone, but the stories two per half-hour are dandy. In the first one tonight Jimmy is tired of being a genius so he invents a dumbing-down machine. His friends, after years of cartoons and video games, don't need one. In the second, Jimmy invents a robot salesman to win a school sales contest. Alas, his machine will do anything to close a deal.

Other choices tonight include: "Starship Troopers" (1997), 8-10 p.m., FOX. Lots of great-looking young soldiers fight nasty-looking insects. The good guys are played by Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, even Neil Patrick Harris of "Doogie Howser" fame. The bad guys are created by computer wizardry.
