A week earlier, NBC had exactly the same rating but beat Frank Continued from Cover Wilson in his finest Southern accent (he's from Atlanta). "We were sitting in a funeral home waiting to meet the embalmer and thought a man would come out looking like Boris Karloff. Then this nice-looking woman appears and starts joking with us. We had to use it in the show." Reid had some ground rules he wanted applied to the show. For starters, CBS wanted the show set in the French Quarter, but it was moved to a middleclass black neighborhood because "that just doesn't get covered on TV." For his part, Reid's character will reflect versatile humor.

There will be understated humor, slapstick and even some poignancy. Under no circumstances will viewers be subjected to stereotypical black characters who scream, "Dyno-mite!" or, "Honky" or strut around the room a la George Jefferson. Reid has a couple of other little perks that go with "Frank's Place" that few other actors can boast. One is that he gets to work with his wife, Daphne, on the show. "The pluses of working with your wife are two pay checks, of course," cracks Reid.

"'We both have dreams and goals, and a vision of what we want to do with our careers. Working together is one of those goals. the minus side, well, closeness sometimes breeds friction. It could either be Paradise Cove or Motel Hell," he adds, "but the nice thing is, we respect each other's 1.1.
