Herald-Timeseporter, Manitowoc-Two Brers. Wis. Decwnber Kindergarten creates hospital I Children sometimes have a fear of doctors. Why? It's not that they are born with the fear because I've read several articles that children are not born with the instinct of fear, it's instilled in them by their adults. However, some programs in schools are trying to counter this fear with knowledge of what doctors and hospitals and clinics are attempting to do for persons who are sick or hurt.

Marcia Flaherty, instructor of the ful Way kindergarten program at Ma gee Schoo, recently completed a unit on "health and hospitals" with her class. During the course of the month, the youngsters "established" a hospital in their classroom, thanks to Two Rivers Community Hospital which provided some hospital gowns, gloves and other essentials. They also provided information concerning the materials they gave the youngsters. Marcia's fa the Dr. John Larsen of Manitowoccame to the classroom and talked to the youngsters about the work of a doctor and what he does to treat persons who are ill.

He also gave them a stethescope and tuning fork. And, to cap off the month, the youngsters traveled to the office of Dr. Jerry Paczkowski in downtown Two Rivers, where Dr. Paczkowski demonstrated the dental equipment and showed the youngsters what be does to treat ailing teeth and gums. Flaherty said in the hospital setting at Ma gee School, the youngsters pretended a doll had an appendicitis attack.

They talked about what the doctors would do and what children could expect if the same thing happened to them. to allay soup, Flaherty said. "Everyone pro vided jiae vegetable for the soup and we talked about what we were going to eat and what we ate. "And we donated the excess vegetables to the Two Rivers Ecumenical Pantry," she added. Another part of the program was having Nancy Paczkowski, a dental hygenist, come to the classroom to talk about the importance of keeping teeth clean.

All in all, the intent of the program is to give the young students the knowledge of what health, hospitals and doctors are all about. And with such knowledge, fear will be negated, for the general rule, because the child not only knows what the doctor will be doing, but why and the ultimate result. Norman Behrendt of Two Rivers was one of 98 persons given honorable mention in the Wisconsin Department of Development Division of Tourism Photo Contest. More than 3,300 entries were received, the department said. Honorable mention photos will be on display in the state's nine Division of Tourism Information Centered, ac- cording to a report.

In the wake of an announcement by Lakeshore Cablevision that it would be seeking a rate increase for basic service, some people have asked about the future of one of the premium channels available in Wisconsin, "Sportsvue." An official for the company said the channel had just 16,000 subscribers, statewide, and needed 50,000 to reach the break-even point Several areas that have gotten it report being disap- pointed with the programming provided. During the summer, the programming is primarily Brewers baseball, with a complement of other baseball, while during the winter, Bucks basketball, Milwaukee Admirals and UW Badgers hockey, the Professional Women's-Bowling Tour, among other things have been the diet. Officials who operate the Two Rivers system say they may consider adding the channel in the spring, "if it still exists." Uowever, the official added, "People don't want to pay $10 to see bowling." The establishment of the Designated Driver Program in Manitowoc County should be a program which is beneficial to everyone involved. In a nutshell, a person in a party can designate himherself a designated driver, and establishments dispensing alcoholic beverages, and part of this program, will provide that person with non-alcoholic beverages free during the course of the evening. Major backers of the program are the Manitowoc County Community Board, Lakeshore Technical Institute, and the Manitowoc County Tavern League.

Some had situations to have stitches, and related this experience to the classmates, but the room apparently was free of anyone who had a major experience in a hospital. While the discussion during the month was on illness and injury, the major thrust of the event, according to Flaherty, was "What can you do to keep healthy?" One of the things the youngsters did was to bulla a germ garden.

Now that is not as dynamic an adven- ture as you might think. What the youngsters did was sneeze or put a sample of saliva in a petri dish and men watched the bacteria grow, under controlled conditions. A short time after that discussion and experiment in the classroom, Flaherty said one youngster had to go to the hospital for tests which involved the taking of thrpat samples and placing them in such cultures. The classroom session paid off in that the five-year-old knew what was being-done and why. The ultimate experience in the classroom was the continuing discussion on nutrition.
