Jaim Paiement complained Tuesday that people have been so law abiding in the last two years that "there aren't enough dogs running around to keep the cats under contrpL" CHAMPION WALKER ALMA, Wis. (UPI)—Barber Mat Stohr may have set some kind of record during his 68 years in the profession—but not for hair-trimming. Residents figure the 86-year-old Stohr imay be the champion walking barber because of the estimated 32,000 miles he has covered on trips between his home and his shop six blocks away. HOLLYWOOD (.UPI)—It's hard to believe there's another face anywhere like (Dick Van Dyke's— but there is. His 'brother Jerry owns it, and his appearance Wednesday night on Dick's CBS- TV show may have igiven us one of the funniest comedy teams in memory. Jerry played Dick's brother. He couldn't fool anybody as anything else. Except for a crewcut, he not only looks like the television star but sounds like him — and even has the same moves. With Dick graciously playing down his own role and being a straight man, Jerry took a thin comedy idea and socked it home: He portrayed a soldier who wants to be a comedian but has a problem — he's a somnambulist who's funny only when he's asleep. . Walking around in his sleep, Jerry played a talented, glib, banjo-twanghig extrovert. But walking around awake, he is shy, can't keep rhythm with his banjo, sings out of tune and' 'mumbles his jokes badly. His timing was priceless. Jerry will ibe back next week. And it's nice to see things finally coming around otherwise too for the Van Dyke crew. The show- has been renewed for another year — a triumph in view of the inner bickering. Costar Rose Marie felt she was being downgraded. And there had been quarreling over whether the program should emphasize • Van Dyke's home life with Mary Tyler Moore or office life with (Miss Marie and Morey Amsterdam. Miss Moore is gorgeous and talented. Producer-writer Carl Reiner is one of television's best wits — in person and on paper. Anil Van Dyke is an unquestionably . fine performer. If someone makes a firm decision about which way the show should go, it,could be the funniest half-hour on video. Especially 'if; brother Jerry is around. Wednesday night, as an extrovert, i he explained to someone who had thought he was modest that bis whole body was shy— "Only sky anouth.is outspoken." He also recalled Gen. Custer's last" remark: "I don't know what's the matter with those Indians—they were all right at the„dance last night" Just so you don't think I'm kidding, this is CBS-TV's own synopsis of Wednesday night's "U.S. Steel Hour" drama: "•Eva Gabor portrays film star Leslie Swann, who plans an elaborate party at her newly redecorated home. in the hope of impressing, her producer. "As an exotic accessory for the occasion, she commissions .'her decorator to obtain two rare black king parrots for her patio. The assignment is relayed to Terrence IFreer i(Kevin McCarthy), a specialist in obtaining rare birds, who persuades an amateur flyer, Eddie Crown <James Broderick), to smuggle the birds out of Mexico and bypass the six-month quarantine period required for such imports. "After the parrots are, delivr ered, Freer is stricken With a strange malady, and when he hears that Eddie Crown's child is afflicted with similar symptoms, he realizes ithat the birds are diseased.'* Would you say that's stretching a bit for a' plot? The play went nowhere and had no suspense at the end after it had become obvious that .1. those at the party would get ill the same as the others — 'but not ill enough to die. . . | " s- PAGE 8 WEEK-END - SPECIAL - FRIDAIY-SAT. Hiss Gabor was not bad; lefs just say she's difficult to disguise in a role. As an actress, she is perfect for three roles: Eva Gabor, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Magda Gabor. Barry Newman was effective as a foppish Hollywood designer; and so was Julie Bovasso as a imovie, columnist, who fatuosly thinks the house is "the most marvelous, fantastic thing I've ever seen in my life." They talk like that here.
