The veteran sheriff who announced the discovery said the evidence reflects a crime that defies description. "I've been involved in this business for 33 years and I've seen a lot of bad things in my investigations, but I think this tops the cake," Pagel said.

"To know that one human being can do this to another human being is beyond belief." Pagel said the teeth and bones were found near the residence of Steven Avery on his family's 40-acre property three miles west of Mishicot. A burning barrel near the Avery residence was "pertinent to the investigation," he said. A "significant" amount of blood was recovered from inside the vehicle owned by Halbach, a 25-yearold photographer. The sport utility vehicle had been found on Saturday, which made Avery's Auto Salvage the focus of the search ever since. More blood was found in and around houses on the property.

And, "the key that was used to start Teresa Hal-bach's vehicle was found in Steven Avery's bedroom," Pagel said. Officials were searching for a man who stabbed a police officer. Manitowoc policeman stabbed; expected to be OK Helicopter, K-9 unit used to search for suspect in assault From staff reports A Manitowoc police officer was stabbed while on duty late Thursday, and police were searching for the male suspect as of press time early today. Manitowoc Police Chief Perry Kingsbury said the officer was wounded in the neck and hands, but would recover. The officer, who was not identified, was giving statements to investigators early today. The search for the suspect began shortly before 11 p.m.

Thursday and remained underway at 1:30 a.m. today. Kingsbury said officers responded to a report of a suspicious person pointing a rifle into the woods along Rapids Road near Conroe Street They found an individual matching the description, but he did not have a firearm in his hands. Officers asked the individual, a white male, to come talk with them, but he ran across Rapids Road. The officers pursued and tackled the man, which is when the stabbing occurred, Kingsbury said.

The suspect fled the scene. Manitowoc police, the Manitowoc County Sheriffs Department and Two Rivers police were involved in the search for the suspect, described as 6-foot, 170 to 190 pounds with curly blond or brown hair and wire-rimmed glasses. Avery, 43, of rural Two Rivers, will appear in person, according to Michelle Moehn of the Calumet County district attorney's office.

She said bail is typi cally set at such a hearing. Avery will be held in Calumet County Jail until the hearing, which is open to AVERY the public, Moehn said. According to a criminal complaint, investigators found two firearms and 11 spent shell casings in a search of Avery's residence Sunday, and he was arrested Wednesday. Investigators were searching the home after the vehicle of photographer Teresa Halbach was found on the Avery property. According to court records, Avery has been convicted of three felonies, including two counts of burglary, endangering safety and an earlier charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.
