Lew Wallace, of this state, has beeB appointed governor of the ter j'' ritory of New Mexico. This is rather a tardy recognition of Oen. Wallace's Tiluable services in assisting Haykb to steal Florida's four electoral vows, but all who have watched the course of the administration in this respect felt sure "that the sage of Crawfordsvillc would not be forgotten. The appointment is probably made at this time in order to assist Orth, whose election to congress WALLACE is opposing with all of his might, It la hoped that Wai.iace will leave the district at once, and thus free Obth from a decided embarraiw pient. We predict that Wallace will tiot eipigrateuntlJ after election.

THl Chicago Time prints an alleged Interview with Blaine, of Maine, in which that so called (Statesman, of Utile UOAJ, memory, speaks very contemptuously of CoifKLiNO, Bptleb, and Other radical worthies. of defeating the election of WiHiaui S. iiolman, who, after a rest of two years from all legislative lalmrs, has been again put in the field for congress in the fifth district of Indiana. It is unnecessary to add, for etery reader of newspapers knows, that iiolman is a democrat, and that he has made remarkably fine record in congress. He has always been an economist and honestly so, allowing the same principles that govern him in private to control him in his public life. Ever since Mr.

Iiolman has been a member of the house he has occupied a leading place there, a osition way in advance of any other repreaentatic from his state. He has deserved this distinction, lieing one of the most industrious, energetic and attentive members that have ever lieen honored with a seat in the national legislature, lie is an extraordinary worker, and has a way of keeping his district and state so prominently before the bouse that one would supposo there was no other state or district in the west. He ha not lost twenty four hours in the many years that he was a member. On days when no business is to lie transacted, and which are set apart for debate ouly, Mr. Iiolman is seldom present, being required to use the opportunity thus afforded him to attend to his detrimental business.

Nrin Cirf Hunting; (Srenbaekn. OH City Derrick.) "Here is a piece of engraved paper a greenback;" and he thrust his lalxir cal loused thumb and finger into his vest pocket. That wasn't the right pocket, and he immediately passed over into the other one. Although the general's thumb and finger seemed to be making a very thorough inventigation, yet they did not come in contact ith the sought for bank note "Here is a piece of engraved paper," repeated the eloquent ajioetlc of greenbacks, so that the audience might not loae the thread of discourse; "here is a picpe of engraved paper a aad he flew from one pocket to another with lightninglike rapidity. Some bloated landholders and hard money democrats on the hack seat began to snicker, and one of them said: "General, you have either pullmldown the wrong vest, or you have on your other pants." This very poorwitrreated some laughter, hut the general was nut cast down.

Turning his pantaloon's pocket inside out, am! exhibiting them in all their emptiness, lie said No, gentlemen, I have not got on my other pants. These are all the pants that I possess. The trouble with me, as with nine tenths of my hearers tonight, is not that pants arc too plentiful, but that money is Um confounded scarce!" The house came down promptly, and during the uproar the general negotiated a loan of $5 from one of the vice presidents of the proceeded ith the illustration. A Coin Emprrt. One of the most skilful exerts in America, writes a Washington correspondent, is J.

Tandy, coin examiner at the treasury, to whom 1 uin indebted for mnch valnahln information. Mr. Tandy has a remarkable gift of discerning the slightest fraud in specie, and fet be can hardly tell how it is done. a counterfeit piece be (oncealed in a heap of money, he will detect it blind folded. All that is required is to run his fingers through the mass, and in a few momenta every one is tested.

This is the result of that remarkable power of touch which is only perfected by long practice. Hucb a man is of immense value in a place like the treasury. Coin in this institution is handled in large sums, and is wheeled on trucks like other merchandise, but in weighing a bag the loss of a single piece would lc noticed. The treasury is floored with marble tile, but these would soon be de Jtfoyed by the heavy Voll through the specie department. For this reaaorl the strongest woodei floor Is being made of maple strips set edgewiscAand fastened in the most secure manner.

Even such a bottom is none too solid for the incessant trituration of iron wheels and heavy burdens. A Il1 Woman Goodneaa. ClitCHUo Tjmosji. Miss Carrie Watson, the keejier of a fashionable house of ill fame, sent on the other day, by the American Express Company, the snug sum of $006.60 for the yellow fever sufferers of Memphis. This is the same woman who rendered such aluablc assistance to the health department during the scarlet fever epidemic last year.

Aaa contrast, it may lie noted that the mayor's appeal to the (odly portion of the ity yielded a single 5 bill. The New York Wurtd thus bids goodbye to the bankrupt law: "Ertt the bankrupt law. Exeunt premiums to speculators in merchandise, real estate and stocks to take risks with a bankruptcy whitewash in jierspective. Ermnt icrjurics, frauds, liogus assets, swindles, ilack lettered lawyers and commercial jackals. Knttr moreconfidence between buyer and seller, more pluck for the debtor, less suspicion for the creditor, and a quieter feeling in the discount market.
