and C. Railroad was a vital section in the eventual rail connection between St. Louis, and Baltimore, Md. It was a time of great rejoicing in states served by the several railroad companies which would play an important role in the War Between the States which loomed on the horizon. The 1857 celebration marked one of the high points in Ross County history when Chillicothe once again played a memorable part in the development of Ohio.

"Nothing interested us more than a view from what is known as the Mountain House which stands on an elevation full three hundred feet high. From here we obtained a bird's-eye view of the neat and beautiful city below, and a charming one of the level and fertile Scioto valley for a distance of twenty to thirty miles, dotted with farmhouses, and presenting a perfect picture of agricultural prosperity. "To the right and left this view was bounded by a range of bills with some mountains of respectable elevation in the background. Mound Mountain, which first attracts attention, derives, its name from a remarkable Indian mound erected on its summit; Logan's Mountain, fifteen (by the writer's calculations distant, also is visible, presenting a beautiful and graceful outline." The strangers were up early the next morning to stroll the streets for a brief glimpse of their host city and numerous carriages were ready to take them to points of interest. The entries were opened to senior citizens through the efforts of the Ohio Commission on Aging in cooperation with the Martha Kinney Cooper Ohioana Library Association. Director Martin A. Janis said that "in this bicentennial year, I am certain that many of our older Ohioana will be able to use their personal reminisences to enter either a poem or essay."
