119 5, 1997 ARTS ENTERTAINMENT THE SPECTRUM Page A9 Wednesday, November Wallace Lee paintings in exhibit during November For The Spectrum ST. GEORGE A student of Max Bunnell and Del parson, Wallace Lee will show his works at The Roland Lee Art Gallery in a special exhibit during November. The artist will be present at an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 and the public i is invited.

A retired dentist and former mayor of Panguitch, Lee has spent the past seven years concentrating on fine art with an emphasis on transparent watercolor. He has recently had work accepted in several prestigious national competitions. Lee's primary subject matter is the Southern Utah landscape. Although he paints mostly in watercolor he is also adept with oil and pastel. He will be introducing dozens of new watercolor landscapes completed during the summer months, including scenes of the southwest deserts, high mountain aspens and meadows, plus the red rock canyons of Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon.

He has received numerous awards over the years including placing twice in the watercolor division at The Scottsdale Artists' School's juried art shows and in the watercolor division at the Dixie College Invitational Art Show. He also won the "Juror's Award of Excellence" at the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary juried exhibition of the Nevada Watercolor Society in Las Vegas, Nevada and became a signature member of that group in 1996. In 1994 Lee's painting of the Jacob Hamblin Home was selected as the poster image for the Pioneer Courthouse Invitational Art Exhibit where he was the featured artist. He also painted the 1997 St. George Marathon poster.

He has taught art part time at Dixie College for the past two years. Following his retirement in 1990, Lee and his wife Joan moved to St. George where he registered for classes with Bunnell and Parson at Dixie College. He has also studied with and been influenced by Spike Ress, Hogyu Ji, Ann Templeton, Ray Vinella, Michael Lynch, Everett Kinstler, Howard Carr, Richard Schmid and Harley Brown. The free recital will begin at 7:30 p.m.

in the Thorley Recital Hall of the SUU Music Building. Included on the program will be "Laudamus te" from minor Mass" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, selections from "Myrthen, Opus 25" by Robert Schumann, and numbers by Victor Herbert and other more recent composers. Jennifer Hartman, an SUU student, will accompany Wilson. "Ms. Wilson is at home in musical theater and cabaret, as well as concert and art song," said Carol Ann Modesitt, assistant professor of music at SUU and a former instructor of the recitalist while both were at the University of Colorado.

"She is comfortable and effective performing in a wide variety of venues." A native of Colorado, Wilson resides in New York City. She has performed at Lincoln Center in Max Bruch's "Odysseus," and at Carnegie Hall in Hector Berlioz' "L'Enfant du Christ." She was also featured in a recent production of "I Can't Be Talkin' of Love" at Judy's Restaurant and Cabaret. Among her upcoming performances are an appearance as guest soloist in the "Messiah" with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Chorus and a recital at St. Peter's Church Music in Chelsea Series in New York City. 'Promised Land' filming at casino today Today part of an episode of the television show "Promised Land" will be filmed at the Rancho Mesquite Casino. There will be local residents playing extras. "Promised Land" was being filmed at an overlook of Snow Canyon near St. George Monday where a framed house was filmed. The show should be on the screen in two to three weeks about a compulsive gambler.
