Gazette-3 'Lawless Years' Relives 'Old Days' By JOHN When I first came to New the Irish dramas of Sean O'Casey very big in New York. Both critics the Irish drama but for entirely The critics loved it because the Irish were then and been geniuses of the spoken word always have and its drama and the Irish dramas "Shadow Substance," "The Plough and the. Stars," "Playboy of the Western World" were big important plays.

But the public, it seems to me, took these plays to their heart because Ireland and the Irish were the perfect Never Never Land, the land of Make-Believe. For instance, the impact of "The Plough and the Stars," which is about the Easter rebellion of 1916 in Dublin, where it is almost a sacred subject, and the impression it makes on the typical New York theatre goer are startlingly, staggeringly different. In Dublin, when the play was presented, they tore up the seats in a wild fury of patriotic indignation. In New York, they laughed. The Irish rebellion, at that distance in time and place, seemed to have been an adorable little uprisinga point of view that would get you a hit in the head from any proper Irishman.

The Irish seem -and this may get me a hit in the head--a charming and impractical and quaint little people with mannerisms that seem marvelously suited to entertain a man for a couple of hours in the theatre. It's all i in the point of view. Another Throwback I bring all this up as a rather long-winded introduction to "'The Lawless Years," which are the '20s and which have now receded in time to the point where they represent the same sort of quaint Never Never Land that Ireland does to the rest of us To those who grew up in the '20s, that decade was (I'm just guessing here because I didn't grow up in it) rather matter of fact and ordinary. At least, I never felt that the people who were in their twenties in the '20s had any idea their hero would be considered so all-fired romantic by later generations. All of which makes the '20s perfect television fare--as perfect in its way as the Wild West which is the all-time Never Never Land.

Lawless Years" (Thursday p. EDT. NBC) was filmed in Hollywood by MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, the last big movie company to succumb to that despised little upshoot, television, and it sure looks it. That is, the series is beautifully filmed and the settings and costumes and all the outer trimmings are mar- M-M-M Delicious--Treats Are A Simple Matter To Bake When You Rely On DUCHESS Self-Rising FLOUR Distributed by Clark MILLING CO. velously authentic. In this case, the outer trimmings are important because they comprise a large part of the charm of Lawless Years." For instance, one episode opens old radio monkeying, "KDKA is with a guy with an he announces blissfully. "What is KDKA?" says another character. "Pittsburgh," says the first guy, whole era. "We need a car for tomorrow," says the other guy.

"Take the Pierce-Arrow," says the first guy, awakening another flood of memories. It's "Evocative" In short, "The Lawless Years" is evocative. The brownstone steps of this mythical street awaken tugs in the hearts of all us New Yorkers because the brownstones are rapidly and tragically disappearing. It is "Dragnet" in a Pierce-Arrow, which for my money, is a much more beautiful vehicle than a horse. If the villain has to come charging, around the corner spitting bullets I'd rather he would be in a PierceArrow any day.

I recall talking to a Hollywood producer who had just flown in for a television production in a rather large way about ten years ago and he said to me: advantage we have here in Hollywood in producing for television is that the warehouses are full of stage coaches that were bought and paid for by the movie industry." The warehouses are also of Pierce-Arrows and the cloche hats and beaded skirts of the '20s and the very exact replicas of the machine guns used by Al Capone and his boys. And what sort of stories do you hear on "'The Lawless Years?" Aw, who cares about the stories? What plots! What settings! What lovely, lovely backgrounds! It's Glocca Morra-that's what it is! It's Never Never Land! (c) 1959, New York Tribune Tribune, Inc. Pike County 4-H Clubs On Upswing WAVERLY Participation in 4-H Club work continues on the upswing in Pike County, with 630 boys and girls carrying 905 projects enrolled in the 1959 program. County Agent R. O.

McFerren reports that girls still outnumber boys, 394 to 236. He added that the 1959 enrollment shows an increase of 51 over the 1958 total of 579. Each of the 45 Pike Clubs are under the leadership of a volunteer adult advisor. These local leaders now total 94, Mr. McFerren informed.

To date, the majority of girls have selected clothing and nutrition as projects. Mr. McFerren reported considerable interest in band and personality development. Boys are enrolled in a variety of programs, including woodworking, electrictricity, tractor maintenance, conservation, gardening and livestock. An increase in livestock projects has been noted this year.

There now are 15 steer feeding, 24 dairy and 25 swine projects. John Luther "Casey" Jones was killed in the railroad accident celebrated in the song, on the morning of April 30, 1900. Storage space predominates in the tiny rooms of the model apartment; furniture and cabinet designs are old-fashioned by our standards of sophisticated decoration. Color schemes would not appeal to our decorators. Strawberry and gray vinyl squares on the bathroom floor establish the color mood for the area with pink plastic tiles on the walls and a strawberry shower sheet.
