10 Spectrum Thursday, July 16, 1987 2 Pine View Middle School teachers study Constitution SALT LAKE CITY -iw w View Middle School teachers recently completed a two-week training seminar at the University of ; Utah on the Constitution, the political process and citizen responsibility under the American system, a spokesman said. Bill Jacobsen, history teacher, and Blake B. Pickett, a world geography and civilization teacher, were two of some 30 educaters selected from the intermountain area to attend the Taft Institute . for Two-Party , Government, funded by a nonprofit organization based in New York City. The Hinkley Institute of Politics coordinated the seminar. Among more than 80 politicians, bureaucrats and political campaign experts addressing the teachers .were Utah Sen. Jake Garn and Rep. James Hansen, Howard Nielson and y Wayne Owens. The teachers also met with Gov. Norman H. Bangerter at the capitol. "We were exposed to many different views of politics," said Pickett. "The speakers are impressive in dealing with the American political system,'! he added. - . Jacobsen described the institute as outstanding, saying he would love to attend in the years to come. Participants were chosen based on interest, ability and the applicability of material studied to courses they teach. Most of the educators expenses were covered by the Taft insuiuie. ft, J "vV v ' J f -v f L 1 I w, L I J fir- Bill Jacobsen Blake Pickett Shamgsget leader training Darrin Shamo Terissa Shamo HURRICANE Darrin Shamo and Terrisa Shamo of Hurricane, recently completed the Rocky r Mountain Region Cadet Leadership School held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. This activity is sponsored by Civil Air Patrol and is designed to provide instruction and practical experience in public speaking, written communication and leadership technique. The instructors are faculty members of the USAFA, active duty Air Force, Air Force Reserve Officers and experienced members of the Civil Air Patrol. This year, members of Civil Air Patrol from 28 Wings (states) attended the Rocky Mountain Region Staff College, bringing a wide background of experience and ideas to the activity. The course is designed to improve the leadership techniques of all cadets in attendance. Alison Buoy takes overall Cinderella pageant title ST. GEORGE Alison Lynn Buoy, 6, daughter of Alan and Barbara Buoy of St. George, was crowned Overall Cinderella at the State Cinderella Scholarship Pagaent held recently at the Four Seasons Convention Center. Buoy will reign as the state Cinderella tot over the next year, and along with the three girls crowned in the Miss Mini Miss and Teen division will appear in parades and functions throughout Utah. Buoy was crowned Miss Personality, Miss Photogenic and Miss Cinderella in the tot division for Washington and Iron County prior to competing in the state pageant. She has been invited to attend the International Cinderella Pageant to be Aug. 1-8 in Miami, Fla. GEORGE Staycha Shaw recently competed in the Cinderella State pageant held on July 7, at the Four Seasons Convention Center. She won the Beauty Crown for her age division (10 to 12 year olds). She was also first runner up to the over all crown of Cinderella. Staycha chose a piano selection for her talent. She is the 11 year old daughter of Raymond and Brenda Forbes of St. George and Max Shaw of Salt Lake City. . Emily Shaw wins pageant division ST. GEORGE Emily Shaw participated in the Cinderella State Pageant held at the Four Seasons , Convention Center on July 7. Emily won the over-all crown in her division. As Utah Cinderella Miniature Miss she will be advancing to the International Pageant in Miami, Florida. Emily also won the photogenic division. She played tne piano tor her talent , selection." Emily is presently ' seeking sponsors to help with the costs of traveling to Miami," said a spokesperson.
