clan, and the equally famous French philosopher, Henri Bergson, have been elected chairmen of the newly founded League of Nations Commission for Intellectual Collaboration. Weingartner was born in Dalmatia in 1863 and called to the Berlin Royal Opera as alternating chief conductor in 1891. In 1898 he went to Munich to conduct a series of guest performances and subsequently also in Vienna, without the permission of Count von Huelsen, at that time the Intendant of the Berlin Opera. Thereupon Count von Huelsen charged von Weingartner with having broken his contract. The court finally ruled von Weingartner WAS to be prohibited from conducting in Berlin for the term of 16 years.

In 1893, however, he served this Gordian knot by giving a series of symphonie concerts in Fuerstenwalde, a suburb just beyond the precincts of Berlin. The event at that time was the talk of all Germany. Weingartner was married to the American singer, Lucille Marcel, who died in 1921. Among the correspondents that Miss Sherwood acquired was Gendo Nakai of Osaka, a Buddhist priest.
