13 By-Pass Princess Anne, Md. 651-1568 SHORE FISHING REPORT day, Shad Landing The story around Crisfield, and also at Chance, was trout, but in large supply it seems. Very few other catches were being reported. Crabs, both peeler and soft, are the bait mainstays for sound fishermen. Supplies still appear to be somewhat limited.

Good fishing news from Tangier Sound and nearby waters was in short supply yesterday. Wicomico Bad news. Muddy waters and little fishing being done as a result. A few smaller sized trout and rock were taken from the Monie Bay, but other areas were noticeably off. Assateague Monday's good trout and kingfish catches dropped to just kings on Tuesday, just a few kings on Wednesday and practically nothing at all on Thurs- State park officials reported that additional rains since Monday have made a bad fishing situation worse.

Anglers are practically non existent in the very muddy Pocomoke River. A Freshwater Trip "That fish was of bragging size," said Russell Cooper of his son's recent rainbow trout catch. Cooper, and his 10 yearold son Wayne, spent three days fishing the Raven Fork stream near Cherokee, N.C. "I've been bear hunting in this section of for the last four years country, been itching to fish that stream for some time. I told Wayne that as soon as school was out we'd give it a try and I wasn't disappointed that we did," Cooper Although several good sized brown trout were taken, Cooper, who is an inspector with the State Roads Commission, said he was especially proud of the 21-inch long rainbow trout that he landed.

"It was one of the largest rainbows I've ever seen," he said. However, Cooper's top catch wasn't long in being bettered by his son a student at Prince St. Elementary School. "Wayne pulled in a rainbow that measured 22 inches and had a girth of his father said. taxidermist estimated that the fish weighed, between and pothe father and son team were both using Mepps spinners to lure the trout.

TOP CATCH. Wayne Cooper holds a 22-inch long rainbow trout that he caught in a North Carolina stream on a recent fishing trip with his father, Russell Cooper. This was the top catch of the three-day trip. Rotary Hands Jaycees 6-0 Shutout Rotary shut out the Jaycees 6 to 0 in the East Salisbury Little League last night. Salisbury, wa. 21801 301-742-7055 or 749-8629 BLOODWORMS WHOLESALE AND RETAIL Peelers Squid Well-Rested Englehorn MAMARONECK, N.Y. (AP) "I've had more rest than anyone else a whole year," joked jovial Shirley Englehorn after taking the first round lead in the Women's U.S. Open Golf Championship. But Shirley, the only one of 150 players to par the rugged Winged Foot Golf Club East Course Thursday, has also had more physical problems than most anyone.

In 1960 she had to overcome a serious spinal injury. Five years later she suffered a badly I damaged ankle in an automobile accident. Just a year ago she had to withdraw from the Ladies' PGA Championship, a title she was defending, because of the ankle. She underwent surgery last July and again in March to fuse the bone. Doctors told her she'd never play pro golf again.

But spunky Shirley proved them wrong. She came back, walked over the layout and putted her way to a 72 and a onestroke margin over Pam Barnett and Betsy Cullen. "Walking is the best thing for it," Shirley said, pointing to her puffy left leg. "Last week was the first week I walked 18 holes. I played five rounds.

So I thought I'd come out here and give it a go." She took the front nine in one over par but came home with a one-under 35, the day's best performance the final nine. Joanne Carner, whose long drives powered her to the 1971 title at the Kahkwa Club Course in Erie, struggler in with a 79 on the layout drenched by Hurricane Agnes and dampened by light occasional showers Thursday. She wasn't alone. Fifteen others carded 79s, including alltime money winner Kathy Whitworth, who like Mrs. Carner, couldn't sink a single birdie.

Also in the group were Laura Baugh, the 17-year-old U.S. Women's Amateur titlist, and three of her victorious Curtis Cup teammates. Among 13 at 78 were Sandra Palmer, two-time champion Louise Suggs and Jane Blalock. Miss Blalock, embroiled in a legal battle with the LPA over rules infractions, said she was still experiencing the effects of a judge's ruling Wednesday which lifted her suspension Brittingham Wins On Two-Hitter George Carey doubled and Richard Jenkins singled him home and that was all Cliff Brittingham and Arby's needed. Brittingham tossed a masterful two-hitter in shutting out National Premium 1 to 0 in Fast Pitch Softball League action last night Brittingham bested John Albert Ennis (11-4) in the mound duel.

Ennis pitched a five-hitter. Vaughn Pope and Carroll Shockley had two hits each for National Premium. In other action, Koppers beat Dr. Pepper, 4 to 2 with Charlie Muir getting the win. Sid Thompson was the loser.

Muir pitched a three-hitter. Phil Evans had three hits and drove in two runs and Jim White had two hits and an rbi for Koppers. Charles Uphsur had two hits for the losers. Bill Gordy notched his tenth win in a row as Jack's Sanitary Service romped past Eastern Shore Oil 9 to 2. Gordy is 10-1 while loser Grover Adkins is 0-1.

Twelve walks proved the undoing of the Oilmen. Salisbury Auto Springs defeated Salisbury Merchants 6 to on Bob Dennis' four-hitter. Dave Webster was tagged with the loss. Phil Briggs, Andy Carmine, Charlie Parsons and Bob Taylor each had two hits for the winners. Mac Pusey duplicated the feat for the losers.

Shirley Leads Ladies from the pro tour pending come of her $5 million damage suit. "I guess I suffered a letdown today," said Miss Blalock, of two LPGA events this year and the leading money winner with $38,000. "It's like the day after just winning a big tournament." Another quick recovery, such as last weekend's, may be needed to offset what could be a downward trend in several Shore fishing areas. First, the good news. Ocean City Fishing is still going strong here.

Chartered bluefishing boats and general fishing headout of this resort port continue to do extremely well. Jackspot, 22 miles offshore, is the prime bluefish grounds. Boats are returning to dockside, some as early as noon, with anywhere from 60 to 100 ed blues. Head 1 boats are starting to take some -sized trout in dition to the lingcod, sea bass and just a few tautog. The first porgy of the season was also boated this week.

This species has been declining in recent years, so much so that the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament has dropped them from their list of citation fish. Flounder fishing likewise is very good. One of the most accessible spots is also one of best, the Route 50 bridge. A local resident, Erma Hartman, returned from the bridge Tuesday with a genuine doormat-sized flatty. Mrs.

Sandra Cooper, a secretary at the Tabot E. Bunting dock facilities, said the Hartman woman didn't want to register the catch, just weight it. The flounder tipped the scales at 17 pounds, Mrs. Cooper said. A check of the Maryland Sport Fishing Record Book-Atlantic Coast Division revealed that the 17 pounder would have established a new record.

Chincoteague Flounder, trout and kingfish are here, according to Capt. Bob Pohlmeyer at Bob's Fishing Camp. Excellent bluefishing is the story farther offshore, at Winter Quarter Shoal, Artifical lures are the best bluefish attractors. Bottom fished minnow bait in Black Narrows Bridge waters and in the intercostal waterway in back of Wallops Island near the No. 5 daymarker are the most frequently mentioned combinations for flounder fishing success.

Squid, fished around and between No. 2A and No. 3 buoys in the old inlet, is the best trout fishing bet. Bloodworms are achieving moderate success for surf fishermen in search of the kingfish. Delaware Bay By JOHN BOZMAN Of The Times Staff Trout fishermen here were doing well until Thursday when inclement weather in the form of rough seas and wind-driven rains put a halt to most efforts.

One confirmed report was that a small party of anglers fished in the rain Wednesday to the tune of 200 pounds of yellow fin trout taken from the offshore coral beds near Slaughter Beach. Generally speaking, Tuesday and Wednesday results were very good in most parts of the bay. It's now a majority opinion that the trout are "in for good" here. Farther north, in the Bowers and Big Stone Beach areas, trout fishing is likewise said to be very good, both in numbers and size. Both squid and bloodworms (sometimes used together on the same hook) are now working well as baits for the trout.

Surf fishing around Bennett's Pier is also resulting in good trout catches. Summer flounder catches are starting to increase also. In the Indian River Inlet area, the trout, rock and blues were being caught in good numbers from the inlet proper, the jetties and around the base of the overhead bridge, respective. ly, until Thursday. Most observers contacted felt that a good fishing weekend was in store if the squalls clear out of the area.

Tangier Sound Some fishermen are a bit apprehensive about what effect, if any, the recent flooding at the head of the Chesapeake Bay may have on the fishing. Tuesday and Wednesday results were about average, but (Thursday's were off.
