Coach Russell Calls New York Toughest Team By RALPH BERNSTEIN PHILADELPHIA (AP) The fourth-place Boston Celtics meet the third New Knicks National Basketplace ball Association's Eastern Playtitle starting today, while first- Baltimore and second-place Philadelphia watch on television. That's what happens sometimes in the fuzzy world of pro sports playoffs. The Bullets and 76ers went 82 regular season games to finish first and second only to be eliminated in playoff series. Boston did it to the 76ers Friday night 93-90.

The Celtics didn't play one of their better games, but it was good enough to win. That's one of the things that has made Boston NBA champs ten of the last 12 years, the ability to win on an off night. Celtics' player-coach Bill Russell was the to admit that Boston didn't play well. "I don't think we played well, but maybe they (the 76ers) had something to do with it. They fought us all the way." Boston closed out the 76ers 4- in the best-of-seven game series.

The Celtics won the first three games, lost the fourth before wrapping it up before a out Philadelphia crowd of 15,244. It didn't come easy. Boston led 86-76 with 5:11 remaining. The Celtics were up 1 2:48 left. Yet, when Hal Greer hit a 20-foot jumper with 1:22 on the clock, it was 91-90 and Philadelphia was on fire.

The 76ers recovered a wild pass, then called time. "We looking for a play off the post," 76ers Coach Jack Ramsey "It never developed. That hurt." What happened was that Billy Cunningham, high scorer for Philadelphia with 23 points, took an off jumper from the side with 22 seconds to go. The ball hit the front of the rim and dropped into Boston hands. The Celtics then converted a pair of free throws to wrap it up.

As for the Knicks, who beat Boston six of seven games during the regular season, Russell said, "They're the toughest team in both divisions right now." New York eliminated Baltimore in four straight games. Gov. Mandel To Throw Out First Ball For Birds The Baltimore Orioles are ready to open the 1969 baseball season Tuesday afternoon. Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel will throw out the first ball noted baritone Joseph Eubanks of Morgan State will sing the national anthem a full color guard representing all branches of service will perform some 25,000 special Oriole key chains will be distributed and the "chow hounds" will get their first chance to dig their teeth into a brand new food specialty, the "pizzaburger." All this will take place when the Birds play the Boston Red Sox. MEMORIAL STADIUM will be decked-out in holiday regalia and even before the fans pass through he turnstiles, they will be serenaded by a roving Dixieland band.

Inside the park, Zim Zemarel and his orchestra will entertain both before the game and between innings. After the two teams are introduced and the Governor throws out the first ball, Oriole rooters will get their first glimpse of the "20 second" clock in operation. Designed to enforce the rule that requires a pitcher to deliver the ball to the plate within 20 seconds after receipt of the ball, with a loud trumpet like noise and flashing lights. The stadium gates will open at noon. MADE TO ORDER KEYS MADE WHILE YOU WAIT! SALISBURY BATTERY CO. 505 W. Main Lakers, Rockets Triumph In West 76ers' Downfall Completed By Boston, 93-90 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS "Philly is dead, Philly is dead," yelled Emmette Bryant, leaving unsaid the obvious: the Boston Celtics are alive again, and kicking. The rebirth of the Celtics, who finished a dismal fourth in the Eastern Division of the National Basketball Association this season, came alive Friday night when they wrapped up their playoff semifinal against Phila-33 delphia with a 93-90 victory for a decisive 4-1 spread in the bestof-seven series. Celtics now open the East best-of-seven final set today on national television at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks, a surprise winner against Baltimore.

In the Western Division semifinals Friday night, Los Angeles closed in on a trip into the final with a 103-98 victory over San Francisco for a 3-2 lead while San Diego evened its set at 2-2 against Atlanta with a 114-112 triumph. Bryant thoroughly enjoyed his first playoff triumph in the erwise quiet Celtic locker room until teammate John Havlicek, a veteran of many Boston playoff successes, told him to "cool it." But Philadelphia's Hal Greer, another playoff veteran, couldn't believe that Philly was dead. It wasn't over until Billy Cunjumper in the last minute ningham missed an off balance the 76ers had cut an eight-point deficit to 91-90 with 1:20 left. Then Bryant and Havlicek, who totaled 22 points, hit free throws to wrap it up. Cunningham had 23 for the 76ers in a defensive contest in which Boston hit only to 80 field shots and Philadelphia 35.1 per cent.

Los Angeles, which dropped the first two games of its series before winning three straight jumped to a 20-point second quarter lead, but had to hang on when Jerry West fouled out with left and the Warriors pulled within 100-98 with 16 seconds to go. thrones Egan dropped three free to clinch the victory. Wes finished with 29 points while Joe Ellis had 23 for San Francisco. Elvin Hayes' desperation 18- foot shot the buzzer made San Diego a winner after Joe Caldwell had knotted the score with two seconds left for Atlanta, which has not beaten the Rockets on the West Coast this season. Hayes finished with 30 points, four less than the Hawks' Walt Hazzard.
