ONE of the old landmarks of New England, pleasant to visit and never wearying the permanent or transient, is the Massasist House, Springfield, Mass.

While we can have such landmarks as these in hands as capable of managing them as Arthur H. The reputation the New York Circus has acquired by the remarkable excellence of its entertainments will always guarantee large audiences for this admirable establishment. The name of Lent is familiar with the patrons of amusement throughout this country, and associated, as it always has been, with strictly first-classing circuses, when seen in connection with such an institution, it is an assurance that all pledges of superiority are correct in all respects.

Therefore, we have no hes1tation in recommending Lent's New York Circus as meritorious and attractive to degree not rivaled by any similar exhibi- America. in A NEW lot of Victoria Lawns at Stewart's. THE DAVENPORT AND ST. PAUL. R.

DA THE GREATEST DAVENPORT, IOWA, JOHN ROBINSON'S POETRY. 'Tis more than forty years ago, you and I did see a There was a man in the west, He had a farm, 'twas none the best He bired a man to carry it on, Whose name it was John Robinson. John Robinson he soon got tired, And wished the lord be ne'er had hired And said to me the facts I know, I'll make more money with a show Threw up his land and started east, Bought twenty cages of wild beasts; And through and through the country went, And many and many a dollar spent, All to perfect his monster show, To please the boys and girls you know. And now it is his great delight To give two shows both day and night, Puts up THREE tents on the green, The biggest ever yet was seen. Take my advice young man and go With your true-love to old John's show For a spangled dress is bound to win, And your love will always go again.

John Robinson will surely come, Thro' all the west with Are and drum; Make way with the great mastodon, He is the only Robinson. Now young men all, be warned in time, And save your money every dime; And from your pockets plank it down, When John Robinson comes into town, To buy the tickets for the show, And when you've seen it homeward go, Tell everybody that you meet, That you've enjoyed the biggest treat, And if old John comes here again, To north, or south, or on the plain, There's naught can stop me, wind or rain, From visiting his tents again, And for one ticket you pass free, Through circus and menagerie, The biggest elephant in the land Will gently eat from children's hands. The camels, too, both black and white, They are the people's great delight. The monkeys, they are fall of fun, And to their cages boys will run, We've said enough, and we are done. Now go and see John Robinson.

Old John Robinson will exhibit in Davenport, Monday, July 31st, 1871. EDITORIAL -The editor of the Lacon (I11.) Home Jonrnal, in his complimentary on what he saw in Rock Island, during the meeting of the Press tion there, gives the following attempted hoax, which it seems was a failure in his case: At the hospital on the Island is exhibited a tall skeleton suspended by a chain, which an obliging soldier with the gravity of a sphynx, assured us was that of Col. Davenport, assassinated here in 1844. Whether he really believed it, or wished to hoax visitors we don't know, but Col. Davenport rests quietly in the church yard, and his family still residing the vicinity would not permit such desecration.

CURE FOR certain family near the depot have been afflicted with rheumatism lately, the wife severely. They were finally told that Colchian seed steeped in whisky, was a sovereign remedy. The woman used it by outward application, and was benefitted. The husband was up last night at a late hour and being in some pain took a drink. The whisky was all right, but the seed was'nt, and a very sick man was the resuit in a short time.

The deadly poison went for him strong, but Dr. J. F. Baker pulled him through, and he is in a fair way for recovery to-day. -Take the naked truth, and you'll be happy.

On yesterday the Sabbath School of the Christian Chapel in this city, held their annal picnic at Long Grove Arrangements were made with the Davenport St. Paul railroad, and the company, consisting of the members and the friends of the Chapel and Sunday School, took the morning train about seven o'clock and returned about seven in the evening. The tickets sold show, there were seventyseven adults and ninety children who purchased tickets, besides numerous small children who went free, proving this excursion to be one of the largest of the kind which has been from our city this season. Arriving at the station they repaired to the grounds which they had selected on the property of Mr. Brownlie, opposite and little west of his residence, which were found to be suitable for the occasion in every respect.

Addresses were made by Rev. H. H. Black, the pastor, Mr. Wm.

Russell and Elder Exley, of Long Grove, all of which were exceedingly appropriate and interesting. The party were provided with eatables, which served for their dinner at noon, 88 well as al lunch at eleven o'clock and also at four. The children amused themselves with ball playing, croquet, swinging, and, altogether, enjoyed themselves in highly satisfactory manner. Long Grove is becoming a favorite resort for excursions from this city, which demonstrates the entire acceptability of the situation. AN ORGAN FACTORY.

Considerrble excitement is being had in Rock Island regarding the proposed establishment of an organ manufactory at that point. The propositions come from Messrs. Davie Jackson, organ builders from Chicago, who ask that the sum of $20,000 be raised by the citizens there, through subscriptions, this being a requisite capital to start upon. A meeting is to be held at the Harper House this even ing to make definite arrangements toward the desired end. These gentlemen have achieved something reputation in the building of pipe organs, throughout the West.

Mr. Jackson formerly associated with Mr. H. W. Chant, of Chicago, in this business, and as a specimen of their work, the "big organ" set up in Farwell Hall, Chicago, is perhaps the best.

That instrument has received much praise is well as some criticism from noted musicians, since the musical part of it was completed, and has been thoroughly tested by Geo. W. Morgan, Creswold, Buck, Penfield, and other distinguished instrumentalists, all of whom, we believe, unite in saying it has in point of great musical power and numerous combinations, but few superiors in the West. Rock Island is most excellently adapted as a point for such a mapufacturing establishment, and these gentlemen have shown their geod sense in selecting that city for the removal of their business. We have but little doubt the people of our sister city will meet the requirements asked with the deliberation due so enterprising 8 cause, and settle the matter with prompt response.

THE DEMOCRAT TO MR. ROHLFS. To Hon. M. J.

Rohlfs: SIR. Your letter published in the Gazette of this morning is at hand, and contents duly noted. The length of your communication forbid that we should reply specially, suffice it for the present, for us to say that we believe that it is perfectly exhaustive of the subject. As you decline being a candidate we must treat you as any other private citizen, and as your name is not likely to be presented to any convention of which we may be a member, we cannot promise you our support. Your last fire at Senator Harlan as you retire, we rather admire, for two reasons, you don't back down from the circular and 2nd, we can tie no to you on that fight -The field against Harlan.

It is strange however, friend Rohlfs, that you bave to defend your acts in this matter. Our experience in life as well as observation, has been, a good act and a correct vote, needs no defence, they explain themselves. In conclusion allow us to wish you that joy and repose in your prairie farm which you so much need, and which the troubled waters of political life can never afford. We dismiss the subject so far as it relates to you. Who next! THE DEMOCRAT.

BUILDING PROGRESS. day. PEORIA WATER WORKS. From the Transcript we learn the following relative to the Peoria Water We notice the several large buildings which are being put up as well ae those undergoing extensive repairs are progressing finely, and work is going on as rapid as the most sanguine can expect. The immense pile known as the Bishop's Church is going on in a most substantial way.

The Gothic style of architecture, and the extra finish of the roof is demonstrating that this building will be one of the most imposing edifices in the West. The work is in competent hands, and will be completed in good time. The Reformed Church which is located nearly opposite on Brady street, is in a course of systematic improvement, and the addition to be made on the church is expected to be ready for occupancy by the congregation by the first of August, at which time the pastor, Dr. Peeke, is expected to return and resume his labors under the new order of improvement established. A NEW lot of Victoria Laws at Stewart's.

FORWARD MARCH. -A gentleman who has recently made a pilgrimage to the various leading points in the state informs us that in no other town in our borders is there 80 much activity in building and general improvements going forward 88 in Davenport, We have heard the same story several times this summer, and believe it to be correct. Every mechanic and the laboring men, too, have all they can do; the brick makers are exerting themselves to their utmost to keep up with the demand, and the city is "sprucup" remarkably in many of its heretotore ragged corners. Trade is as good it generally is at this season of the year and steadily increasing in volume day by Works: THE WATER WORKS. -The Superintendent of the water works, last evening, reported to the council that he had collected and paid over for water.

rents during the month of June, $6,156.78, and for wa ter tax, $754. The consumers have increased 162. The water mains have been extended 10,731 feet, four inch pipe, with the usual connections and fire hydrants. A gang of pumps have been set up at the works to furnish the bluff with are now in successful operation. The consumption in the city per 24 hours is two millions gallons and should dry weather sets in, the probability is that the increase would be nearly one third.
