Considered one of the Blue Hen's all-time great linemen, 6-2, 220-pound Chesmore has lettered at starting right tackle for the past two seasons. He is a native of Baltimore, and was graduated from Loyola High in that city. The rugged play of Chesmore is regarded by his coaches as one of the most important contributions to Delaware's Middle Atlantic Conference championship and Lambert Cup-winning 1962 son.

He was chosen for the AllEastern College Athletic Conference Team of the Week for his standout play against Rutgers, and earned the weekly award of Philadelphia's Maxwell Club after his play in the Connecticut skirmish. Chesmore, who wears thick glasses off the field, and must don contact lenses to play, has compiled an excellent academic record at Delaware. His vocational goal is clinical psycholo-35 gy. Problems Solved At Third; Phils' Seek Pitcher, Catcher The Phillies got the third base-1 man they were looking for this week, Don Hoak, and now where do they go from here? And the answer is just this a right handed hitting catcher, and another starting pitcher. "Then we'll come near being a solid ball club," declared John last night from Rochester, site of the minor league meetings this week.

QUINN INDICATED he has his sights set on the Washington Senators, which needs a shortstop, and has some likely looking young pitchers. Either Bob Wine or RuAmarao is being used as trade bait by the Phillies. He didn't reveal where he was planning to obtain the handed hitting catcher. Anyway, to get the 35-year-old Hoak, the Phils' yielded to the Pittsburgh Pirates Pancho Herrera, a first baseman of questionable major league calibre, and Ted Savage, 25-year-old outfielder. A SIXTH PLACE club doesn't give up a rookie like Savage with a 10-year future ahead of him for a veteran like Hoak, who at is in the twilight of his career, A pennant contender, making AIRSTREAM The Perfect Setting For The Holiday Season Celebrating Christmas in a new Airstream Land Yacht! RICE INC. Dual Hwy. 13 Seaford, Del. Seaford NA 9-9427 an all-out, one-season effort, would risk such a move. This deal could back-fire like the one the made in peddling Ken Raffensberger to Cincinnati, and of most recent date, trading Jack Sanford to San Francisco.

And don't forget, too, Stu Miller was swapped to the Giants, much to the Phils' regret. Quinn. replied in this manner: "SAVAGE, WITH HIS youth and potential, couldn't have broken into our outfield of Don Demeter, Tony Gonzales and John Callison. "Look, Savage may become a great ball player. But you can't be a coward about these things.

It's the old cliche of giving up something to get something. Remember, too, Savage is a big risk. In Hoak we have a leader, an inspirational type ball player for at least two years. That's something we've been without for quite some while; a leader. Meanwhile, our farm system should bring something up to play third base in the next couple of years.

That I'm confident of. SAVAGE HIT .266 as a rookie. Hoak, thought to be slipping, swatted only .241 last season. "Third base has been our shaky spot for some while," Quinn continued. "Now it is solved.

This allows us to return Don Demeter to the outfield. I imagine he is gloriously happy out there in Oklahoma City." Demeter played a reluctant third base most of last season. He feels more comfortable in the outfield. Eight games were lost at third base last season because of faulty play, according to Manager Gene Mauch. Demeter didn't ask for the task.

He had no choice. American Association Dies As Minor Leagues Regroup The International League the Pacific Coast League absorbed the American Association yesterday and became two 10 club leagues in the most sweeping reorganization of the minors in baseball history. The American Association, a cornerstone of the minors since 1902, surrendered Dallas Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, and Denver to the Pacific Coast League. Little Rock, which had replaced Louisville after the 1962 season, and Indianapolis moved into the reluctant International Lea- gue, which finally yielded to the pressure of the major leagues.

UNDER THE terms of the far reaching new deal for the minors adopted yesterday, the majors will underwrite at least 100 minor league clubs in three classifications Triple- Double A and Class A. The expanded Pacific Coast League and International account for the 20 Triple-A clubs as planned. Each big league club except Washington has at least one farm club in either of the Triple A leagues. Milwaukee has two Toronto in the International and Denver in the PCL. DON DEMETER 'He's Happy' WITH THE death of the Amer-18.

Ralph Kress Of Mets Coaching Staff Dies LOS ANGELES (AP) Ralph (Red) Kress, who spent more than 25 years in the major leagues as a player and coach, is dead of a heart attack. Kress, 55, was on the coaching staff of the New York Mets last season. His manager, Casey Stengel, said he was "the hardest working coach I ever saw" and "a great inspiration." Kress died late night at his home in suburban Canoga Park.

He had taken an annual physical checkup only a week before and appeared to be in good health. Kress played in the majors a dozen years, first with the old St. Louis Browns in 1927 and later with the Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and New York Giants. He appeared in 1,391 games, mostly as a shortstop, and had a career batting average of .286.
