The reality of the world outside the lines hung heavy at VA Memorial Stadi, um, both on and off the field. You could see it in players' faces, you could feel it in the air, in the way the cool July evening slid into darkness with the heartbeat of a baseball game thumping in the back- ground. Steve Martin was 24 years old when he died early Thursday morning. "It pretty much puts everything in total perspective of what life is," Paints manager Glenn Wilson said after the game, barely holding back his tears. "It's precious.

This game, that's what it always should be a game. Winning and losing has no bearing on the outcome of life. And at his Wilson didn't finish that sentence, and he didn't have to. Reality crashed into the Paints world when Martin lost his life It makes you look differently at the idea of a pennant race, an All-Star chase and checking the Web to see whether 'Thaverse City won or lost. It makes you look at everything differently Gone so quickly.

And only 24. Steve Martin's memory is almost everywhere in Wilson's office at the ballpark Behind Wilson's desk, where he sits to do his interview after just about every Paints home game, there's an oversized Paints schedule printed on cardboard taped to the wall. Next to every game is the last name of the starting pitcher and a few other notes, scribbled here and there, some indicating a or an next to the games already played. There was something else written on it Thursday, right at the very top. Steve Martin.

In our hearts. our picture taken with their arms around our shoulders. Alt we use them, three hours a night, three months a year, to forget about our own realities, our own problems. We sink our- selves onto a seat and we let our own heart slip into rhythm, into that thump-thumpthump that is the pulse of a summer night spent at a baseball game. That's why we care.

That's why it matters when the Paints win 7-0 which happened Thursday. It's why it matters when Lavelle Morgan throws a gem in his first-ever start at VA which also happened Thursday. It's why we sing in the seventh inning and it's why we celebrate when Adrian Cantu drives in two and scores two runs that too happened Thursday. And it's why, when something so tragic as Steve Martin's death breaks up the cozy rhythm of baseball, it hurts so much. Glenn Wilson's heart was as heavy Thursday as you could imagine.

He was a man who found no comfort anywhere, a man deeply touched by tragedy "Steve Martin was identical, in my mind, to Glenn Wilson the ballplayer," he said, his voice breaking on just about every word. "He played the game exactly the way I played the game. He used his fear of failure and turned it into laughter and he made other people laugh amund him." There's why we care. Mat was Steve Martin. In our hearts.

They're not heroes far from it.

They're not superstars they wouldnt be in the Frontier League if they were. They're just guys, you know? Ball players. We get their autographs, we skip high-fives, we have I wrote his name there, and in my hat, to always remind me that I'm managing a game. Not life," Wilson said. "Now, the losses of 10-0 and 15-0, they don't mean couldn't care less." So yeah, the Chillicothe Paints won a baseball game Thursday.

Who cares? Well, we all do. And, in a way, Steve Martin's death reminds us of why we cam. Of why is important when the Paints play well, of why we AP Overall leader Tom Boonen of Belgium rides as he takes the start of the 5th stage of the 93rd Tour de France. 0.
