Republicans can take comfort from the fact, however, that the Democratic percentage in presidential elections in California has declined steadily since the Rooseelt landslide in 1936. Truman barely nosed out Dewey in 1948, partly because Henry A.

Wallace's candidacy split the Democratic vote. Still the combined percentage for Truman and per centwas far below what Franklin D.
