PAGE TWO EVENING HERALD OF SHENANDOAH -ASHLAND MAHANOY CITY DECEMBER 19, 1972. 1 OBITUARIES Boro council views problem of parking Joseph Banko -r---r-i 4 -vafi I 1 uower filed a complaint against the Police Department for being lax in their duties when a large furniture truck parked overnight on North Main street in a restricted area. Mr. Dower said the vehicle, which was parked with its engine running and lights on from 4:15 p.m. to 11:45 a.m., one day last month as a hazard to motorists since it hampered their maneuverability.

Mr. Dower said he had phoned in three complaints before the truck was finally moved to Genetti's parking lot. "I phoned the Police Department in the afternoon and Officer Chernetsky said he'd place? Was it? Not with all that snow around." Mr. Dower said that no fine was issued to the driver to the best of his knowledge. Mr.

Karlavage asked Mayor Gerald Mulhall if he had any knowledge of the incident. Mulhall said that the police force has a policy of asking any truck drivers to park their vehicles at Genetti's if they plan on remaining overnight. In this instance, the Mayor said, the driver left only to eat and stayed in the truck overnight. He could not be escorted to Genetti's since the supermarket was still open and the Borough cannot abuse the privileges given by the BY AL WALENTIS A local deliveryman is having difficulty obtaining special parking privileges at his loading zone while a large furniture truck was permitted to park overnight in a restricted area. This was one Of the curious sidelights during the Citizens Petitions portion of Monday night's meeting of Shenandoah Borough Council, Joseph' Ivanowski, a deliveryman at Connie Fashions, approached Council with a request that a yellow line be painted near his delivery spot at the factory.

He stated that without any special area to park his vehicle, he often is forced to block the street. Council President John Karlavage stated that all special parking privileges were abolished but that a notice of "Loading Zone Only" might be acceptable. Outright no parking areas are not being considered by Council since they are often abused, Mr. Karlavage said. Immediately after hearing Mr.

(UPI) Three generations of Virginia O'Hanlon Douglas' descendants gather Christmas day in living memorial to the woman whose letter 75 years ago sparked one of this season's most enduring tributes. Mrs. Robert Temple told UPI that in some ways the family observance has changed since her mother died more than 4 years ago at the age of 81. But many of Mrs. Douglas' send Chiglinsky to check," Mr.

Dower elaborated, "then Chiglinsky said it'll be moved in a few minutes. When it was still there the next morning, I called Mayor Mulhall. He was at work so I phoned Councilman Ed Kalavage and it was finally moved. "When Officer Bartusik came around, he said it was parked in a good place before. A good grandchildren and great-grandchildrenthose who live close enough will be here to help celebrate.

Mrs. Temple noted that one change since her mother's death was that the number of telephone calls from newsmen had dwindled although the family recently went to Washington, D.C., to help launch the first Santa Claus stamp ever issued by the United States. management. "I don't deny a grievance with the night shift," Mayor Mulhall said referring to the vehicle remaining in a no parking area after the supermarket closed. Mr. Karlavage was quick to note the irony of the situation. "This is silly.

It isn't fair for one truck to park for hours and hours while others can't even load," he said. Temple, "and probably never will" is the spirit that prompted the letter from 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon, asking if there truly was a Santa Claus, and the now famous reply, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." Mrs. Temple recalled that her mother wrote the New. York Sun in the fall of 1897 the response by Editorial writer Frank P. Church appeared shortly after.

It was reprinted each Christmas Eve thereafter until the 1950s when the Sun merged with the now defunct World Telegram. Church died in 1916 and Mrs. Douglas always insisted it was he who deserved all the credit. The most famous part of Church's response to Virginia's letter: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable their existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world. would be extinguished." "PACK" ARRESTED OAKLAND, Calif.
