The Daily Utah Chronicle, February 25, 1970 I New Mexico first Utah sets for final clashes BY GEOFF TOWNS The only reason would be to decide which team will go to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. Utah's Mike Ncwlin still leads the WAC in scoring with a 29-average. Newlin became the third player in WAC history to score over 600 points in a single season by totalling 50 in the Colorado State and Wyoming games last week. He now has 640 points. Sports Editor Utah will start a new basketball season Thursday consisting of two games called the "You've come this far, now let's see if you can go all the way" season.

The Redskins have two more chances to win. But with both games on the road, it might be more accurate to say they have two more chances to lose. After Utah's sweep of its opening road campaign against the Arizona schools, road wins have been hard to come by for any team. The Utes must first take on New Mexico Thursday. The Lobos, while only holding a 4-- 7 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) record, have shown to be extremely tough at home, beating Arizona State and Wyoming.

And while the Redskins are battling New Mexico, they will be hoping that Brigham Young University can take its second decision from Texas El Paso. However, the game will be played on the Miners' home court, and the odds say UTEP will increase its mark to 9-- at which Utah now stands. Saturday will see the showdown between Utah and UTEP in El Paso. If the Miners win, they will certainly take a giant step toward sole possession of the WAC title. But if Utah wins its match Thursday and then bows to UTEP, a first place tie is a large possibility.

The Miners would still have to leave the safety of home to meet New Mexico. The possibilities: If UTEP downs BYU and Utah and loses to New Mexico, the Miners would end the season with a 10-- 4 record. And if the Redskins split their final two games, they would also put a 10-- 4 mark in the books. If a first place tie does occur, Utah and UTEP, as well as Arizona and Wyoming who are mathematically still in the running with 7-- 4 and 5 records respectively, have agreed to determine first place by the toss of a coin.
