The Test Made of Pipes, Hydrants and Facilities. Cleven Streams Thrown at One lime, Borne of Them One Hundred and Fifty Feet High A Large Crowd of People Gather at the Corners to Witneas taeTeit and. Oat a Dnoking. At three o'clock tins afternoon an alarm was turned from the engine house and everything was ready for the test of the water works. Eleven streams were thrown at one time and one of them reached the dome of the court house, and in fact within a few feet of the ball on the top.

A pressure of one hundred pounds of steam at the engine house and ninety pounds at the corner of Berry and Calhoun streets was sufficient power to accomplish this object. The test vras made under the supervision of Consulting Engineer J. D. Cook and Cbief Engineer F. B.

Vogel, and was witnessed by the members of the council, who viewed it in an official capacity, and if the reporter could judge by the expressions made by them, everything waa satisfactory. But this will be for the council to decide upon to morrow evening at their adjourned session, when they will take some action in regard to the matter. Now that the heart of the is so well supplied with protection from fire it would only be just and right that the engines should be stationed in the unprotected districts, and thus afford those protection who help bear the burden of the taxes and receive no benefit. Mayor Zollinger's sensible suggestions to the council last night on this point should not be overlooked, but some action ohouM be taken in this matter immediately. We understand that there will be a grand test made of the works some timein July and itis to be hoped that it may be done on the Fourth as it would 'draw crowda of people here from the country and surrounding towns.

Let the matter be agitated and advertised. Annual Kejtort or the Xrusteas Clerks. Corneal ling Eaflseer and Baglnear. The annual report of the trustees of the water works, submitted to the city council last evening, states among other things that the system is nearly complete, and that an additional appropriation of only about $17,000 above funds in hand will be necessary to complete the works. The cost of construction up to date has been $218,000.

The final cost will be very close to the original estimate. The receipts from services have been $1,173.31, and from water rents and special le venue, $765.70. Bonds to the amount of $260,000 have been sold. There are two hundred consumers on the books, and 240 permits have been issued. A table of rates in different cities shows that the rates for water in this city are somewhat below the average.

There have been 2,598 miles of all kinds of pipe laid, and there are 206 hydrants and 160 valves set The engineer's report shows 73,278, 743 gallons of wateriraised since last December. The report of J. D. Cook, consulting engineer, is very voluminous, and goes into a history of the works from the beginning. The trustees report the resignation of F.

T. Zjllars, clerk, on account of ill health. The corps of city officers elected by the council last night is a good one. In fact, taken as a whole it could not have been bettered, and in this the expectation of The Sentinel has been fully justified. We carefully abstained from indicating any perianal preferences among the candidates for the office to be filled, under the conviction that the council would xer iso a wise dieirction in tbeir selections This has been done, and nut only members of the council, the individals elected, and the general public, have caiue for congratulation on what has been done, but even defeated candidates and their friends have no j.mt caure for complaint that they have not been more fortunate.

There is, we believe, no complaint of unfairness having ht en practiced by any one responsible for his official action. All have had an uiiud and fair chance and ms it was inevitable from the start all could not succeed, those who failed have whatever consolation there ia in the reflection that their failure hms a fair una It i one of the cases In whirh though many be called, but a liinitei few could be chosen. The re election of Chirks S. Bracken ridge a ctty civil engineer; of Henry Colerick as city attorney; of Dennis O'Brien as street commissioner; of F. B.

Vogel as chief of the fire department, may be said to have been in a measure compelled by the completeness with which each had discharged the duties of the place in which he has been continued and from which it might have been unjust to remove him in the absence of any sufficient reason demading removal. But while making special mention of these foremost places, we by no means under value the merits of others called to less conspicuous ones in the city's service. Taken as a whole, last night's elections could not have been bettered. The German Lutheran Synod, of the United States and Canada, met at St. Paul's German Lutheran church, at2.30 o'clock this afternoon, and after the organization of delegates and the calling of the roll listened to the address of Pres.
