Box 4400 Chillicothe, OH, 4E COLUMBUS (Al') A bill requiring public schools to display donated copies of the nation's motto "In God We Rust" or the state motto "With God All Things Are Possible" has cleared an Ohio Senate committee but could get stuck in line for a full Senate vote. The Senate Education Committee recommended passage of the bill 8-1, but Senate President Bill Harris, an Ashland Republican, said Wednesday he would not schedule it for a floor vote until the chamber takes care of what he called more important legislation. Harris mentioned the $764 million tobacco settlement budget that was passed Wednesday and a bill targeting deceptive mortgage practices, now in a committee to work out House and Senate differences, as higher priorities. The House last June passed the bill sponsored by Rep.

Keith Faber, a Celina Republican, by a 78-21 vote. The bill requires public schools, including charter schools run by private entities using state money, to display copies of the mottoes if they are donated or if someone agrees to pay for them. The bill would require schools to display the mottoes in "an appropriate manner" in a classroom, auditorium or cafeteria. Faber said veterans groups, fraternal organizations and even a teenage Republican club in Celina have offered to donate copies of the mottoes. Theresa Fleming, director of Moms for Ohio, a small political action committee that mostly promotes conservative causes, testified before Senate committee on behalf of Faber's bill.

She said seeing the mottoes in schools would instill the right values in children. Lottery Not sure whom to call? "The gift that we give our children will pay dividends for the rest of their lives." Moms for Ohio worked in 2004 for the passage of a special state license plate with the phrase "One Nation Under God" printed at the bottom. The American Civil Liberties Union, which unsuccessfully tried to get the state motto removed from a plaza in front of the Statehouse, believes Faber's bill is troubling.
