Racing loses friend in Grail Trickle warms up at Road America by 6:30, they'll line up according to points. Also, at the start of the first feature, the remaining time will divided evenly among the rest of the features. 141 ON THE RADIO: Rowe, 141 Speedway owner, is continuing his weekly pre-race radio show, beginning at 5 p.m. on WCUB 980AM.

ROWE RETURNS TO TRACK: Rowe will return to the track after a four-year layoff in his No. 141 1999 Monte Carlo that will run with the late models on the half-mile oval at Wisconsin International Raceway on Thursday nights. "Should there be a conflict, the race track will come first," he said. presents Mcleod USA lil id-American Stock Cars By JERRY RHODEN Herald Times Reporter FRANCIS CREEK -Short-track racing always had a friend in Dick Grail, and now fans will always have the memory of the man who opened the third paved track in the state. Grail, 81, passed away Tuesday from complication following a March car accident.

He brought paved racing to northeast Wisconsin when 141 Speedway opened to an overflow Sunday-afternoon crowd 17, 1960. Grail ran the track from 1960 to '75, leasing it periodically until a legal dispute closed the track in 1990. After leasing the facility to Douglas Buhmeyer of Beloit, Buhmeyer reneged on the final two years of his agreement A judge awarded Grail $28,413, according to an April 27, 1992, Herald Times Reporter report, but the damage was done. Grail said at the time he didn't want to deal with the headaches of leasing the track but that he was willing to sell if a reasonable offer was made. Matt Rowe made such an offer in 1997 and assumed ownership in November of that year.

"He never missed a race," said Rowe, who will hold a moment of silence prior to Saturday's 7 p.m. program. "Everybody wants me to get the track going again," Grail said in the 1992 report. "I just want to sit on my butt and enjoy myself the rest of the years I have left." CURFEW LEADS TO CHANGES: When a 10:30 p.m. curfew forced an early, mishap-marred end to Saturday night's program at 141, owner Rowe made some changes.

"It resulted in a lot of upset fans," he said. One alteration came in the point standings. Since less than half of the first feature was completed, points were distributed evenly among drivers. One racer's motor dropped its oil filter and coated the track, and a wreck by Mat Van Elzen also held up the program. Beginning Saturday, the third caution flag of any race will result in single-file restart as opposed to the traditional side-by-side.

On the front end of the program, time trials will begin at 5:25 p.m. each week. If the Hobby Stocks aren't qualified Race Fan UIM COME EARLY! Road America, located in western Sheboygan County, is one of the best racing venues in the nation. Amazingly, the well-known driver and the famous track 7 had never crossed paths before Thursday.

Trickle, a native of Wiscon-'' sin Rapids, practiced at the four-mile, 14-turn road course track in preparation for the Road America 500 weekend July 5-8. "I had to ask for directions how to get here," Trickle said. 1st 1000 adutts will receive a FREE 141 speedway Seat Cushion on Midwest short-track ovals and by competing in NASCAR's Busch and Winston Cup circuits, maybe it's not surprising that Trickle never found his way to Road America before. But to have never seen the place? Even Trickle finds it difficult to believe. "It's so close to my hometown and the fact that I've never been here does seem a little bit odd to me," he said.

"I've been everywhere. If something would have been going on at the track, you think I'd come here on some other program." Trickle's July trip to Road America will be a busy one. Not only will he serve as a grand marshal for the weekend, he will also compete in the NASCAR ReMax Challenge Series and USA Mid-Am Trucks events. 3 1 AT LATE!
