1 4 -r- 4 if 'M -V 'f i v- iV i Sunday, April 2, 1989 Newi Journal, Mansfield, 0. Sports 3-c inor leaguers make list of future Indians Hal. I Lebovitz 1 A I i it HOMEWORK: Mike Hegan, former major leaguer and son of the late Jim Hegan, is in town this week to get his first look at the Indians so he'll be knowledgeable for the tele- cast of their game, Saturday night in New York against the Yankees. I'm looking forward to listening to Mike as he teams up with Jack Corrigan over WUAB-Channel 43. Steve Lamar, whom Hegan replaces, was better at baseball than Corrigan but together they sounded too much alike.

Hegan will give us more inside baseball. Which reminds me, Paul Olden, Herb Score's partner on radio, hasn't gotten the message. If anything, he seems to talk more than ever. Paul, have you no pity on our ears? Friday night, for the Cavs-Bulls game, I had the choice of listening to Joe Tait and Jim Chones on Channel 19 or Skip Caray and Steve Jones on TBS cable. Started with Tait-Chones, switched to Caray-Jones and never turned back.

The Tait-Chones chemistry isn't there. Tait is great on radio, but comparatively is less effective on TV and Chones has yet to arrive as an interesting analyst. He's too repetitive. He should get the TBS tape and listen to Jones' analysis. Excellent.

SO LONG, BOB: I'm sorry to see Bob Golic leave the Browns because BOBGOLIC a iuue bit of this and a little bit of SCORECARD: While In Tucson I carefully checked out the Indians' minor league camp and here's my list of future major leaguers. Remember this comes to you from the fellow who gave you Angelo LoGrande (The Big A): The two who stand out far above the others are Mark Lewis, shortstop and No. 1 draft choice last season, and Joey Belle. Barring injury or emotional upheavel both could be in the bigs within two years. Belle, you may recall, is the young man who blew previous chances because he couldn't handle his own failures.

The Indians now are trying to rehabilitate him and his emotional spring training report card, after 13 games, rates a B-plus. Just once did he show the old signs of immaturity and then he quickly got back on track. Belle, 22, can do it all. A powerful contact hitter. Probably the best phsyical talent in the entire Indians' organization.

And really a great kid off the diamond. He has been playing right field this spring, but is likely to move to left at Canton, where he will start the season. If and when he advances to the varsity, he's not going to replace Cory Snyder and should Joe Carter leave at the end of the season, as he threatens when he becomes a free agent, Belle, if he continues to behave, would be in left and Oddibe McDowell would shift to center. Here are four others who should make it, but not as quickly, say within three to five years: Bo Allred, 23, outfielder, bats and He'd be in 30 percent of the plays at the most. With the Raiders, under his old coach Dave Adolph, he's the perfect fit for the 3-4 system.

Financially and artistically, he had to take the Raiders' offer. His departure is this area's loss. Fortunately, it's only temporary, since this will remain his permanent home. I thought the Browns made a big mistake in cutting Bubba Baker last summer. He had an outstanding camp, better than most of the other linemen but was dropped because Bubba, a didn't fit into the "protect a spot" defense, preferred by the previous coaching staff.

FREE, BUT COSTLY: The signing of 14 free agents by the Browns meant a shelling out of nearly $500,000 in bonus money just for their signatures. Largest bonus, $100,000, went to linebacker Barry Krauss. Art Modell, after reviewing the players gained and lost in the free agent deal, sums up, "We're satisfied we have made quality substitutions across the board. The 14 players we have picked up, despite those we lost, make us a better team than we were two months ago. I also am taking considerable comfort in the way Bud Carson is doing things with the same people we had, let alone new ones.

It definitely will be a new approach and new look." JOE CARTER either the Indians or Browns, can get off the hook. Also look for plenty of tax abatement for the project in which the Coliseum will be turned over to the state, if Akron U. doesn't want it. CHOICE: Several members of the Indians had to turn down invitations to the advance showing of the movie "Major League" at the Ohio Theater, Tuesday night, for they already had made plans to get their first look at the Cavs, who will be playing Atlanta at the Rocco Scotti will sing the national anthem-before the movie, too. And no doubt, Take Me Out to the Ball Game for an encore.

The NBC Today show will have interviewer Mike Leonard, at tomorrow's opener and at the movie premiere. Clips will be shown on a telecast later in the week. MARK LEWIS Joe Carter and Cory Snyder along with Paul O'Neill and Chris Sabo of the Reds will cash in on today's visit to Columbus. The four are booked for a personal appearance this morning at a Kroger store there. Incidentally Carter and Snyder have taped a TV commercial for Wendy's which you'll be seeing soon.

BEHOLD, A GAME: The posts at the Stadium can't be removed so fans unlucky enough to have an "obstructed view" seat behind one of those poles either are stuck or need a swivel neck. Now, suddenly, they'll be able to get the full picture. By June the Stadium Corp will install 43 huge TV screens behind the loges and above each post so the fans can get the action on video they had been missing before. A California architectural firm and the Osborn which built the Sta- dium, are working together on an engineering study for completely rebuilding the rest rooms. The plans are near completion and the work will be done throughout the season.

Portable johns will be brought in from the bullpen to provide relief meanwhile. I keep hearing with greater frequency that within a year Dick Jacobs will announce he'll build his own park for the Indians on the Central Market site that had been purchased for the never-happen Domed Stadium and that an arena will be built alongside for the Gunds who will move the Cavs there. Look for it to be up within five years. Both the Indians and Cavs will share the parking. This is the only way the Domed Stadium committee, which went ahead with its plans without tying up he's fun to have around and remarkably community minded.

But I'm glad for him. I think he made the right move. Because the Browns will be using a 4-3 defense his playing time under Coach Bud Carson would be limited. Will open at Canton. Brian Johnson, 22, catcher, appears to have overcome surgery on right elbow. Fine receiver, good bat. Daren Epley, 21, first base, bats and throws left handed, six-two, 190, good moves and smooth swing. Ramon Bautista, 22 this month, second base, excellent glove.

Johnson, Epley and Bautista will open at Kinston, Class A. Here are my four best-bets among the pitchers: Tom Kramer, Rudy Seanez, David Alvarez and Angel Ortiz. These are kids who pretty much are just starting out and won't be ready for a while. It would be too easy to name those the Indians already have tabbed as being close, such as Mike Walker, Jeff Shaw, Kevin Bearse, Greg McMichael and Kevin Wickander. Save my list and keep score.

Scouts say a 30 percent batting average is good. I think my selections will give me a higher batting average. If not, be kind. VOICE OVER: If the announcer giving the Indians' opening day lineup at the Stadium tomorrow sounds familiar it's because you've heard him as the field announcer for Browns' games. The Tribe has hired Tom Glasenap to do baseball, too.

So Glasenap is now the Voice of the Sta-jdium. The rest of the time he is a teacher at St. Edward's High and the tennis coach there. Incidentally, a test of the new sound system, without any fans in the stands, provided almost a stereo effect. Much clearer than the old speakers, at long last.

A huge new room had to be added to the press box to accommodate the electronic equipment for the scoreboard and the sound system. You'll like the attractive autograph booths located in the concourse between Gates and C. Each Saturday and Sunday two Cleveland players will be there one hour before game-time signing for fans. When Rocco Scotti sings the national anthem tommorow it will be his first appearance at an opener since Peter Bavasi was president of the club. Bavasi, in one of his "house cleaning" moves, put a lock on Rocco's pipes.

FULL CUP: The Indians-Reds game in Columbus today is a sellout. The winner of today's game gets the Governor's Cup and both the Indians and Reds would like to make this an annual affair. The problem is that the Indians would prefer to open the regular season in California, rather than at the Stadium and hope to do so pt least every other year. And California isn't that close to Columbus. 1 IIW.
