6 THE DAILY TIMES Salisbury, Friday, April 15, 1977 New Phone Directory Due Soon New Lower Eastern Shore telephone directories, with the State Capitol pictured on the cover, will be arriving during the next two weeks. "Several new features should help to make this directory especially useful to our customers," R. N. Peregoy, Telephone community relations manager, said. For example, has introduced a consumer aid page which lists the rate schedules for the different classes of residence telephone service.

It also gives the rates for many special types of telephone equipment and services. Another new feature is a sample phone bill with an explanation of the various items listed on the bill. More money saving suggestions and other telephone tips are also listed on several other pages in the Call Guide which provides information on long distance calling, such as when the rates are lowest. And sample rates are listed from this area to cities in other parts of the state as well as across the country. This edition of the directory provides about 52,000 listings in the white pages an increase of 1,700 since last year.

Approximately 79,000 copies of the Lower Eastern Shore phone books will be delivered during the initial distribution. The cover story, on the inside back cover of the directory, relates a number of interesting points about the history of the Maryland State House, which is the oldest state capitol in the United States still in legislative use. Construction of the building was begun in 1772 and it was completed in 1779. Friends Of Animals List Plant Sale Local volunteers of Friends of Animals will have a plant sale Saturday, April 16, starting at 9 a.m. It will be held at the ball field on Civic across from The Mall and there will be live entertainment at noon.

All proceeds will go to the spaying program. Volunteers are still in need of one pound coffee cans and empty salt boxes for the purpose of making donation canisters. Anyone having these items may bring them to the plant sale or call 742-0178. Several donation canisters have already been placed in the Salisbury area and more will be placed this week in Salisbury and surrounding counties. Airman Returns To Assist In Recruiting Here A.

"Airman Turner, son of Mrs. Ruth Davis of Ocean View, has volunteered to assist us in our recruiting efforts." said M. Sgt.

Robert A. Hambury, Air Force recruiter here. "It has long been our contention that no one can communicate better what Air Force life is really like than those who have just completed basic military and technical training at one of our centers. The Hasty Rap program allows our first termers the chance of sharing their experiences with other potential enlistees." Wade H. Insley, III Esq.

(AP) Despite agitation for equal treatment of women and girls, U.S. vocational high schools are making almost no effort to encourage girls to become plumbers, auto mechanics and electricians, research shows.

Stereotypical perceptions of students teachers that boys are "more mechanically inclined" and girls, "cause sexattraction problems" are behind much of the problem, said Pennsylvania State University researchers Morgan Lewis and Lynne Warfield. Their nationwide survey of votech schools failed to turn up single school actively trying to enroll girls in traditionally male courses. In one school, counselors rejected five girls who applied for auto mechanics shop course because "one girl might be disruptive." "Only a handful of girls in secondary schools across the country are enrolled in hardcore male vocational programs," according the researchers' report. The Penn State investigators surveyed the entire country during the 1974-75 school year in search of "pacesetter" schools, those actively encouraging girls to enroll. They found none.

However, they were able to locate 11 that could be considered "nontypical," having at least five girls taking one or more traditionally male courses, such as printing, industrial chemistry, vocational a agriculture and television arts. The report said that when girls did take "male" courses, they did well and, after some initial teasing, were accepted by teachers and male students. The study said no relationship could be drawn between the choice of nontraditional courses and family background, the kind of toys the girls played with as children or the household tasks they performed. The study concluded that vocational high schools could be the leader in breaking down sexual stereotypes. "By exposing females to nontraditional occupations, the school can cause families and employers to question assumptions and practices which have limited the of young opportunities, said.

Request For Zoning For Industrial al Park Tabled GEORGETOWN A zoning application by New Dimensions Inc. to have 50 acres of land rezoned near here for development of an industrial park was tabled by the Sussex County Council this week. Action on the application was delayed pending a recommendation from the county's planning and zoning commission. According to county planning and zoning director Roland Derrickson, the commission recommended the council defer action on the application because New Dimensions hadn't submitted a plan for industrial development. County attorney A.

Dean Betts said it was the council's policy not to act on an application until a recommendation or against it was made by planning zoning. Betts added when the recommendation is made, the council will hold another public hearing on the application. Three zoning applications were approved by the council in public hearings.
