(AP) Beekeepers, who have howled about as loud as anyone against pesticides, may be in line for government reimbursement for the loss of bee colonies.

During hearings which preceded Wisconsin's prohibition against DDT last year, professional honey makers said pesticides on pollen-producing crops were killing thousands of bees monthly. William Leuschow of the State Agriculture Department said 312 bee colonies were lost in 1967, more than 240 in about 195 in 1969, more than 320 last year, and those figures reflect only the officially reported losses. Sevin, used by corn farmers to battle earworm and cornborers, is the main enemy of the pollen-loving bees, Leuschow said. The U.S. Agriculture Department has announced indemnity payments for beekeepers who can show their colonies were harmed, by pesticides sprayed on crops.

Leuschow said a colony is worth up to $25, containing up to 70,000 bees. The state's loss since 1967 may be $25,000, he said. A beekeeper must show he took reasonable precautions against exposure pesticides to be eligible for the govern- Manitowoc (Wis.) Herald-Times, ment reimbursement. However, the requirement also specifies the farmer has to have received advance warning of crop dusting or spraying. Leuschow said isn't much a beekeeper can do anyway.

Where, he asked, could a bee colony be moved to be safe from pesticides, or to be too far for a pollen-seeking bee to fly to danger? The reimbursement program is retroactive to Jan. 1, 1967. Cultural practices play a marked role in the incidence of fire blight.

All blight-susceptible apple and pear trees should be grown under sod culture. Care should be taken not to overfertilize with nitrogen. Heavy pruning any one year should be avoided. This promotes excessive growth of suckers and new succulent wood that is much susceptible to blight infection. Suckers or water sprouts should be removed from trees as soon as they appear.

Blight susceptible apple varieties include Lodi, Ida Red, Wealthy, Jonathan, Connell Red, and Golden Delicious. Most pear varieties are susceptible, especially Bartlett. The Seckel. Kieffer, and Lincoln varieties are somewhat resistant. Moonglow was released as a resistant variety, but is now showing infection.

By JOHN BUCHHOLZ. I streptomycin permits the use of Manitowoc Co. Ag Agent MANITOWOC Fire blight has become a rather serious disease in apple orchards during the last few years. The amount and severity of infection varies considerably with the season. Fire blight is a bacterial disease.

Activity of bacteria and the infection produced in plants is greatly affected by weather conditions. Some varieties of apple trees are more susceptible than others. The age and type of tree that predominates in the orchard has a considerable effect on fire blight infections. Following correct cultural practices can make trees less susceptible. Weather Favors Development.

There has been a resurgence of the disease during the past few years, because weather conditions have been more favorable for blight development and spread. Another reason is that growers have been planting more varieties that are susceptible. Many of the new plantings are not standard trees, rather of dwarf rootstocks. dwarf but, rootstocks have be well fertilized in order to develop into good, productive trees. This may make them more susceptible to blight infection than dard trees of the same variety maintained on a somewhat lower level of fertility.

The first blight symptoms apin spring are holdover cankers on limbs and larger branches, cankers at the base of twigs, and water sprouts on individual limbs. Cankered areas are darker in color than normal healthy bark and usually slightly sunken with a rough appearance. Sometimes the growth seems to begin normally, but after the temperatures get high and moisture is available, a brownish, sticky ooze may appear at the margins of the larger cankers. This ooze is filled with the bacteria causing fire blight. Bacteria are carried by wind, rain, and insects to other areas on the tree, and to nearby trees, The most common symptom is the general twig and spur blight that usually starts to appear from 10 to 14 days after bloom.

The terminals, or new growth at the ends of the twigs and branches, suddenly wilt and become water soaked, finally turning brown drying up. turning brown drying up. This blighted portion, often takes in a foot or more of the terminal end of the twig or branch. The first check on fire blight is to inspect all trees for holdover cankers on the larger branches and limbs and at the base of water sprouts. Cankers should be cut off, if at all possible, cutting well into the healthappearing wood.

Wounds should be disinfected with an ordinary liauid household bleach diluted with water. Mix one nart bleach to nine parts water. Paint wounds with good tree or orange shellac. The knife or pruning tools should also be disinfected before proceeding to a new location on the tree. If only a few trees are involved, 'it will be helpful to prune out blighted twigs as soon as they appear, cutting off the blighted portion at least eight inches beyond any sign of infection.

It is important to remove these from the orchard area and burn them. Permit Antibiotic It may be worthwhile to spray with streptomycin if prevailing temperatures are 65 degrees or higher at the start of the bloom period. A ratio of 100 parts per million strength should be used twice during the bloom and at petal fall. If the temperature continues to range above 65, streptomycin can also be used in the ten day cover sprays. The I new federal registration for oSCO OPEN DAILY MID-CITIES MALL Drug 9 A.M.
