Pair Finds Cancer Study Gives llnsighl On Aging SAN ANTONIO, Tex. <UPD — Two scientists said Sundav their search for a cure for prostate cancer has given them new insight to the secret of aging. Drs. Sydney A. Shain and Leonard R. Axelrod of the Southwest Foundation for Research and Education of San Antonio presented a technical paper on their work at a symposium on normal and abnormal growth of the prostate. "We think that as the prostate gland ages, it loses it ability to recognize the hormonal stimulus which maintsins its normal growth and development," Shain told 90 scientists from 16 countries. The two researchers said they spent '16 months measur ing the ability of rat prostate tissue to accumulate the male hormone testosterone as the gland aped. They said their study offers the first evidence leading toward understanding of the molecular basis of aging. "With these observations we begin to understand the biological basis of aging," they said. The two scientists said loss of rat prostate tissue ability to recognize hormonal stimuli with aging is paralleled by the aging phenomenon in men past the age of 60. t,EISUBE TIME Federal authorities estimate that in 1980, Americans will go on 668 million picnics, 422 million fishing trips, 173 million camp-outs, and 89 million hikes.
