It's her fire. also was most popular in homes with cable hookups, suggesting that quality may be one answer to the networks' dwindling share of the viewing audience.

And then there's tonight's "A Team," fourth in popularity among male viewers and this season's highest-rated new show. It also was NBC's top-rated program. Although "A Team" is colorfully offbeat, it doesn't challenge the mind like NBC's other Tuesday night series, "Remington Steele" and "St. Elsewhere." In ratings for this season's 99 series, "A Team" was 13th, "Remington Steele" 69th and "St. Elsewhere" nowhere 89th.

"It's a mass audience medium, not PBS," says the ad executive who would not be identified. "You're going to have your successes with 'A Team' and your failures with 'St. Grant Tinker, NBC's chairman, isn't convinced that quality programs won't attract substantial viewers. But, he says, "I'm a little disappointed by how long it's taken for people to find them." lit a 9 rihshdancel Y(J I A PARAMOUNT 'VV By FRED ROTHENBERG AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) For a long time, the jokes have been on NBC. Some called it the fourth-rated network behind CBS, ABC and Atari.

One producer, who had two series on NBC last season, referred to it as the National Biscuit Company. Sure, NBC would be No. 1 if the ratings were read upside down, but things are looking better. NBC still is third in viewers, ad revenues and profits although its 1982 profits are up $60 million over 1981 but it is reaching a different audience, and advertisers noticed. VNBC has improved its demographics this year," says Bob Igiel of the NW Ayer advertising agency.

"NBC apparently is appealing to younger adults and male viewers. It makes them a viable buy. They're still not on a par with ABC and CBS, but they've made strides." The end of the prime-time ratings race last week put NBC a distant third, but, in comparison with the 1981-82 season, the network was the only one whose national audience did not decline. NBC also was the only network to gain viewers in the five largest markets, and increase its share of higher-income viewers nationwide. Although CBS was clearly the leader in over-all audiences and ABC was most popular with young-adult viewers, NBC showed prime-time strength with the hard-to-find male adults.

In fact, NBC was second to ABC in males 18-49. "We're still looking mostly for women in prime time," says one ad executive requesting anonymity, "but I can make a good case for buying NBC with my clients when they have male products, or they want to reach dual audiences or they want NBC's cheaper rates. 0c Cou, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that using scrap instead of iron ore to make new steel means a 74 percent energy savings, and, in these times, that's important. When 1,000 -tons of steel are made with scrap, the energy saved is equivalent to 140,000 gallons of gasoline.
