2-1-Manitowoc (Wis.) Near Record Field Signs for Miller Go MILWAUKEE A near record field of 190 will compete for $80,000 in prize money in the seventh annual Miller High Life Open bowling tournament, to be held March 14-18 at Red Carpet Lanes Bowlero. Traditionally one of the highlights of the Professional Bowlers Association national tour, the Miller Open always attracts the nation's top pros, but the 1972 field seems as strong as any in the tournament's existence. Defending Miller Open champion Dave Soutar of Gilroy, will perhaps face his stiffest challenge from Bowler of the Year Don Johnson of Akron, Ohio; 1971 leading winner John Petraglia of Brooklyn, Y. of Fame member Dick Weber of St. Louis.

Both Johnson and Petraglia were Miller Open TV finalists last year eventually finishing 2-3. All three were members of the American ing Congress All American team. Other prime threats include Dave Davis of Miami, 1967 Miller Open, champion and Bowler of Year; Mike Lemongello of North Babylon, N.Y., 1971 U.S. Open and PBA Nationals titlist; Jim Godman of Hayward, 1971. Masters champion, and George Pappas, 1970 Miller High Life Open winner and a 1971 finalist.

Davis, Lemongello and Godman are also on the current All American squad. Then there are some of the steadier players on the tour. such as Mike McGrath of El Cerrito, Seattieande Johnny Guenther of several time All Americans who many think had off years in 1971, even though they earned about $25,000 0 0 000 apiece. McGrath has captured more than his share of the biggest tournaments, and Guenther, the 1968 Miller Open champion, always seems to do well in Milwaukee. Wisconsin fans will again have an opportunity to cheer for Dick of Hartford and former Milwaukeean Wayne Ritger, Zahn, now a resident of Tempe, Ariz.

Each has a worthy string of tour titles. Profits from the Miller High Life Open will again go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Ohio State Votes No to NIT Bid NEW YORK (AP) Indiana, Missouri and Lafayette said yes, but Ohio State said no. The Buckeyes, turned down an invitation National Invitation Basketball Tournament Wednesday after the other three teams had accepted. Ohio State Coach Fred Taylor said only that he had taken a vote of his players, and that it was negative.

The Buckeves currently are second in the Big Ten race while Indiana is fourth. The addition of the three teams Wednesday brought the field to 11 and left five open berths in the 35-year-old postseason tournament, which starts March 17 at "Madison Square Garden. A few of the spots no doubt will be saved for teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. which now is holding a playoff, and for the winner of the Missouri Valley Conference playoff game between Louisville and Memphis State Saturday. Indiana and Missouri will be making their first appearances in the nation's oldest postseason tournament.

Lafayette will be in for the third time. Indiana has a 16-7 record and winds up the regular season Saturday against Purdue. Missouri, the Big Eight runnerup, has a 20-5 record with a game remaining against Oklahoma Saturday night. Coach Norm Stewart's club is led by 6-7 John Brown. Lafayette, a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference.

But if the upset, trend that marked subregionals and regionals continues, look for the likes of several unranked but streaking teams to make the final field of eight Class A and four Class teams in Madison next week. CHICAGO WHITE SOX American League West PROSPECTUS: In just two seasons, the Pale Hose (a cliche that has sunk to being a misnomer since 1 the team now wears red baseball stockings) have jumped from last-place dawdlers to contenders. The acquisition in off-season trades of slugger Richie me 'Dick' "') Allen and pitcher Stan Bahnsen have made the White Sox an even stronger team. In 1970 they lost a club Dick Allen record of 106 games.

Last season, under new manager Chuck Tanner, they missed the .500 mark by just two games. Why? For starters: Wilbur Wood was elevated from reliever to starter, and won 22 games. Third baseman Bill Melton led league in homers (33). High form by these four players could spell first White Sox pennant since 1959. PITCHING--Any team that has Johnny Sain as pitching coach has to be formidable.

He helped Wood to best season of career. Bahnsen Yanks last season) brings expectations. Tom Bradley, who won 15 last season, and a healed Joe Horlen make up tough starting rotation. Bullpen is adequate, with Bart Johnson (2.93 ERA). INFIELD--Either Carlos May (.294) or Allen (.295, 90 RBIs with Dodgers) at first.

Mike Andrews, coming off a .282 season, at second. Melton at third. Weak spot is short: Three non-proved players fighting for position. Dark horse is Jorge Orta, who had good season in minors, hopes to be in tradition of Chico Carresquel and Luis Aparicio. OUTFIELD--In left, Allen or May.

Center -Rick Reichardt, who hit .300 for most of 1971 (finished with .278) Walt Williams or Pat Kelley (both .290 hitters) in right. Good hitting, good speed. CATCHING -Ed Hermann (good receiver who admits to being slowest runner in baseball) and Tom Egan another jourr backstop. Predicted Finish: First in West. Ron Behagen and Corky Taylor, a pair of 6-9 Gophers, were suspended for the season by Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke for their part in the Jan. 25 brawl between Minnesota and Ohio State players. With Ohio and Minnesota abstaining in the voting, Big Ten faculty representatives voted 8-0 against players after spending three days studying transcripts, viewing evidence and hearing Beha" gen and Taylor. Minnesota, winning seven of its last nine games without the services of Behagen, a starter, and Taylor, the team's No. 1 reserve, marched to the Big Ten basketball championship with a final 49-48 victory at Purdue Tuesday night.

In capturing their first clearcut Big Ten basketball title since 1919, the Gophers also earned berth in the NCAA tournament. The faculty representatives concluded that the conduct of Behagan and Taylor, both of whom attacked Ohio State's Luke Witte, was "unsportsmanlike and in violation of conference standards." Marcus Plant of Michigan, acting chairman of the faculty group, said the conference ordered reports on the Jan. brawl by Minnesota and Ohio State filed with Commissioner Duke by Monday to ascertain what further "remedial" action will be taken by the schools against others who may have been involved in the fight. "We want to resolve this case finally SO this doesn't fester and blow up again," said Plant. In other action, the faculty representatives, in a split vote, approved the use of freshmen on varsity football and basketball teams next fall according to NCAA rules.

A recommendation by football coaches and athletic directors to have the Big Ten adopt the "redshirt" practice was tabled until the Big Ten's May meeting.
