Page 6-A -ORLANDO EVENING STAR Phone GA 34411 Monday, March 27, 1972 Salvador Rebellion Crushed SAN SALVADOR (P) El Salvador government forces crushed a weekend military insurrection and declared martial law after heavy fighting that took between 100 and 200 lives and left more than 200 persons wounded, officials said. Gen. Fidel Sanchez Hernandez, president of the small Central American country, told the populace in a Sunday broadcast that the rebels captured him at his home and held him more than 12 hours until they were bombed by air force planes and forced to surrender by loyalist troops rushed to the capital. He was freed unharmed. QUIET WAS reported today, with the country under martial law.

The government said Col. Benjamin Mejia, artillery commander at El Zapote barracks, facing the presidential palace, and Jose Napoleon Duarte, a leftist candidate defeated in the Feb. 20 presidential election, led the uprising. Both were arrested and face possible trial, officials said. Salvadorean law provides the death penalty for persons convicted of subversion.

ANOTHER DEFEATED presidential candidate, Gen. Jose Alberto Medrano, was also believed to be under arrest. He had accused Sanchez Hernandez' ruling National Coalition party of corruption and predicted a military coup if it won. Sanchez pledged to turn over the government as scheduled on July 1 to President Arturo Armando Molina, a narrow winner over Duarto, Medrano and two other candidates in February. Molina cut short a trip to Asia and returned Saturday afternoon to El Salvador.

ONLY MILITARY vehicles were allowed on the streets from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. under the curfew and martial law proclaimed after the rebel surrender. Describing the coup, Sanchez Hernandez said Mejia's forces attacked his home at 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

Some policemen guarding the residence were killed. After a short exchange of machine gun and rifle fire the president said he surrendered and was held at El Zapote barracks in a room filled with weapons and explosives. Both civilians and soldiers were killed when rebel troops attacked national guard headquarters, the president said. -POLICEMEN patrolling the streets were killed in their autos and other security men were killed in rebel attacks against a police headquarters and the national telecommunications center. Fischer relaxes at ping pong TIME OUT Turner Stepping Down As Koscot Chairman OMAHA, Neb.

(P) Glenn W. Turner, Florida multimillionaire, said Sunday he is stepping aside as board chairman of his company. The 37-year-old tycoon, who started his business empire five years ago by borrowing $5,000, said in an interview Orlandobased Glenn W. Turner Enterprises is taking steps to change from a distributorship system to avoid legal problems in certain states. IN NEW York, meanwhile, consumer affairs commissioner Bess Myerson proposed a new city regulation to make it illegal to set up or operate distributor chain sales.

She said two companies owned by Turner, Koskot Interplanetary Enterprises and Dare to Be Great, had been named in complaints to her department. A spokesman for the firm in Orlando said Turner is moving into a consultant position, giving him more time to devote to motivational lecturing in the field. Hobart Wilder, a native of Harlan County, will move into the top spot, the company said. Wilder, who started out three years ago as a distributor, is vice chairman of the board. TURNER WAS not immediately available for comment.

Turner told the OmahaWorld Herald that he intended to continue advising Glenn W. Turner Enterprises after he turns the executive control of the firm over to another person. Turner's organization has 71 subsidiaries in all 50 states and 10 foreign countries. An aide told the newspaper Turner is worth "between $150 million and $300 million." TURNER'S COSMETICS firm, Koscot Interplanetary, has come under fire from some states, which challenge its pyramidal structure. Turner's operation has relied in great part on a franchise method whereby an investor may buy a distributorshop to sell a Turner product and in turn sell franchises to others for commissions.

Attorneys general in some states have said such a chainletter system is fradulent, the newspaper said, in that a distributor may reap profits from selling a franchise without necessarily selling a lot of the product. TURNER DENIED the allegations, and said the company has taken steps to end its distributorship system and become a strictly retail operation. Turner was in Omaha for a sales motivation talk to about 500 persons. Chess Champ Fischer Trains At Grossinger's GROSSINGER, N.Y, (P) Bobby Fischer, America's hope for the world chess championship, rushed into the vast, brightly lit dining room at Grossinger's, a giant resort tucked away in the Catskills. He'd been ensconsed for three weeks at the hotel, a sprawling cluster of recreational facilities, Ping Pong tables, pin ball machines, Pepsi dispensers, indoor miniature golf courses, swimming pool, ski slope and convention rooms.

AT AGE 29, he's poised for a crack at the world title in chess, a goal since the beginning of his brilliant, but uneven, career. "What time is it?" he asked sitting down at a small table. He was pale and his eyes were darker looking than usual. His hair was damp: and neatly combed. He wore a blue suit and black tie, printed with galloping red stallions.

He'd made the 8 p.m. dinner deadline by one minute. "HE USUALLY comes flying in, the last person in the dining room. He's always on the run," said the dining room hostess. If Fischer's running, it's partly from the tension.

He challenges Russian Boris Spaasky for the title in a grueling 24-game match, beginning June 22, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The international chess world has shown extraordinary interest in this match. Some seven countries bid for it. Usually, there are only two or three bids. Prize money for the match is set at $138,500, with per cent to the winner.

FISCHER BEAT Tigran Petrosian, Russian exworld champion, in the semifinals. If he beats Spaasky he will become the first non-Russian to hold the world title in 25 years and the first offi American title holder. This is it. This is the big one -for, a man who's grown up obsessed with the complex moves of 32 chessmen around a checkered board. Fischer usually dines alone in Grossinger's banquet hall, filled with family-size tables, fake flowers, joking conventioneers, families with sullenlooking teen-agers and bubbly children in pink crocheted outfits.

"THE WHOLE theory of a hotel is a giant communal enterprise. But Bobby remains a solitary figure," says a hotel representative. Solitude can be hard to find in this active, noisy hotel, exuding, "fun-time frolic and de long-time meeting place for celebrities, potentates and politicians, it caters to conventions and arranges special singles weekends. But Fischer finds solitude, threading his way through a group of commercial photographers, blue, convention name tags. They have gathered after dinner around the grand piano to sing, "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now." HE WALKS by their exhibits of complex camera equipment and past the bar where guests are busy drinking Russian vodka.

When Fischer is more relaxed, he's good comp a ny quick, funny and interested in other people. But this weekend, he wasn't giving interviews. He mostly stays in his room, saying in a soft voice, "I gotta study. I gotta study." Many hotel employes see him as a loner--withdrawn, nontalkative, his work, but still polite. He asked the maitre d'hotel how much he should tip.

When left to decide for himself, he gave the man $100 and said to spread it around to the others. He got $55 back. "He's a gentle boy," says the maitre d'. "If the conversation lags, he gets up and says 'See He makes very few concessions to the social amenities, which is refreshing in this day," says a hotel employee. His regimen is simpleand private.

He does physical fitness exercises in his room, but doesn't work out at the hotel health club. He swims--but usually when no one else is around. He's polite when guests come to say hello-but keeps to himself. He says skiing is too much trouble, but he plays table tennis, bowls and goes to the movies OC- casionally. He often enters the Olympic size indoor pool at the last hour.

"He's got it down to A science, like everything else he does. The pool closes at 6:15. He waits until 6:05. He swims three or four laps and leaves," says life guard Eddie Torres. Fischer also is the last one out of the men's health club.

"He's always in a corner, to himself," says Mike Farcus at the club, adding that Fischer can be a sore loser at table tennis, slamming down his racket when he loses. "It's usually 2 p.m. when he gets up," says Lillian Sterc, staff chambermaid. "I knock on the door at 1:30 and then sit and wait on the stairs until he comes out He's polite and nice. And he's very good looking," she says, breaking into giggles.

Why did Fischer come to Grossingers? It's a scene from his younger days, for one thing. "This was the first hotel he ever stayed at," says an employe. His mother, Regina Fischer, brought him to the hotel when he won the U.S. championship at age 14. Today, Fischer is staying Cantata The Crucifixion by Stainer and Maundy Thursday Communion Service THURSDAY MARCH 30TH 7:30 P.M.

as the guest of the hotel. If he remains in his room in the two-story Tudor-style cottage until June, he'll have the longest run of any guest on record. "I've met the greatest figure skaters in the world. Florence Chadwick trained here. I've known great golfers like Sam Snead.

They were as dedicated as Bobby but they've had other interests," says Paul Grossinger, chief executive At of the Grossinger Corp. Fischer does have other interests. He knows pop music. He likes the Motown sound. BURNED UP? REPAIRS ON YOUR AUTO AIR COND.
