"It was not an easy business for him," said Paul Cooper, a friend. "But he persevered with it." At the Homan Peters partnered with a social service agency to hire recovering drug addicts and others down on their luck, his daughter said. "He had this amazing ability to forge real connections with people from vastly different backgrounds," Fujito said. Through his ownership of Homan, Peters got to know former Chicago Bulls player Tom Boerwinkle, who co-owned an oil company in Stickney.

Peters and Boerwinkle became regular lunch companions, Fujito said. The two made a seemingly unlikely duo the diminutive Peters had little knowledge of basketball but Peters and Boerwinkle had a number of other shared interests, including their businesses and also the fact that Peters was interested in the Latin language and Boerwinkle's mother had taught Latin. Peters wound down the Homan Corp. in 2009 and retired. Peters enjoyed going to the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera, and in 1971 helped to start a girls' soccer league through the Glencoe Park District.

"He was interested in the arts, theater and politics. He was getting close to being the man who knew everything," said Frank Stern, a longtime friend. In addition to his wife and daughter, Peters is survived by a son, Ken; and six grandchildren. Services were held. Goldsborough is a freelance reporter.

By Bob Goldsborough Chicago Tribune J. Irwin Peters was a longtime DePaul University marketing professor who fled his native Austria after the Nazis assumed control before World War II. Peters, 93, died of sepsis on March 19 at Evanston Hospital, said his daughter, Alison Peters Fujito. He had lived in Glencoe for more than 50 years. Born Imre Erwin Popper in Vienna, Peters was 14 when Germany annexed Austria in March 1938.

The family was Jewish and his father, a lawyer and decorated combat veteran who fought for Austria during World War was jailed. The Nazis agreed to release him as long as the family left Austria, and the family sought refuge in Slovakia, Fujito said. Several months later, Peters left Slovakia to attend boarding school in England, where he studied chemical engineering and worked in a potato field in the summers, his daughter said. During the early 1940s, Peters a German speaker who was concerned about rising anti-German sentiment in Great Britain changed his name to John Irwin Peters. In 1949, Peters earned a doctorate in chemical engineering from Imperial College at the University of London, his family said.

While his parents who survived several close calls with the Nazis and moved back to Vienna after the war had hoped their son would return to Vienna as well, Peters chose a different path, taking a job in Wilmington, as a chemical engineer for Du-Pont. While at DuPont, Peters earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Delaware in 1960, and Michael; Caring son of the late Joseph and Violet, nee Maddalozzo; Dearest brother of the late Nina Grimaldi and the late Dorothy (Joe) Pareti; Fond uncle, great uncle and friend of many; Cherished friend and companion of Regina DelZenero; Retired State Farm Insurance Agent of 31 years; In lieu of flowers donations appreciated to Sisters of Providence, Attn. He later worked at the Kawecki Chemical Co. in New York and at Liquid Carbonic in Chicago before starting work in 1969 as a professor of marketing at DePaul. "When he was younger, he had wanted to teach history and had followed European politics closely. He always had this broader view," said his wife of 62 years, Sylvia "And marketing is land of the humanistic aspect of industry, so that's what drew him to teaching marketing, and he ended up teaching international marketing. And he thrived in the DePaul environment." Peters retired from DePaul in 1988.

"I remember him as representing some of the best of the old traditions," said the Rev. John T. Richardson, retired DePaul president. "He was a man of great culture and learning, he had great respect for other people and he was a pleasure to work with. And he made a great impression on all the students that he taught." In 1986, Peters bought the WH.
