It the 8rt meeting under the new admlnlitratlon, and President A. Bandall vn the chair.

There wa largo attend, unci and a very encouraging intereit among the membership that prom lsel to yield gratifying returns to the city's interests during the coming year. The officials are aatlifled with the showing that has been made by the club up to this time, but. they take a tlll mole hopeful view Of the futuie and every effort will lie. nut forth to male brooming year one of notable' advancement In accent. ing the presidency of the, CoramerclA.

club Mr, AO.in.a com prehenslvt addfesi past nl in a measure outlined the future, Be said! THE INAUGURAL ADDBESS, Gentlemen of the Commercial Club; The commencement of the second year of ourclub is a proper time to take a look, over the past and te forecast the future ft our work. Some person not accustomed to meeting with, us lnqulr. lngly ask what his the club done implying by the question a doubt if it has doue To my mind it occurs that the or. ganlzatlon of the club and the carrying of it on for a year with ever increasing Interest Is alone a great thing. la a city that has never had an organised body of its citizens looking to Its welfare and upbuilding, to 'bring together and hold together In harmony over 200 of its best business men for a year is something to.be proud of, When we consider that a Commercial club like ours is a body of men organized for no selfish purpose, that the member of It give their time and their money to the work with no hope, no expectation of any personal profit but simply that they may benefit the city and the public, the Importance of the organization should be ap'parent This body of men respresentlng every business; Interest, every religious opinion, every phase of political belief tire united into a harmonious working force by the one unifying seutlment clvlo pride.

Such A club may not accomplish much that ts tangible in Any one month or six months or one year, but who can gainsay its power; for goodf It our club has done nothing else In the past year, it ha brought about a better feeling between our business men. common purpose has produced a common sentiment, Private jealousies have been allayed and men whi) scarcely spoke as they passed ate new good friends. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE, But the building up of a club and the creating tf good fellowship among our business men, 1 hot the only thing we have advertised our cltyj Behaving out organization we Joined ourselves te the other com merclal of the state and thus 'are allied with them to aid in the betterment of the law and the commerce of the stats. We have corresponded with hundreds of people seeking new location for manuf acturlng plants. We have examined into the merits of many of these and with the exception of one have pejected them, not worthy the consideration of the people, The fact that we have re J8cd applications as JunWortnyMa certainly to our credit.

The one factory that we Accept ed, we commended nostneam.Y. To'locaie'thls plAnt the club gav Us best effort. To our credit it 'ca be sityjwe diA.all that wa re quired of us. They asked of Jtfld.heet fMtopr site in this city. This we secured, xney asitea oi uf concessions from the railroads and the city.

We obtained all. In not one thing did we tall, So far a the Commercial club Is concerned the Wlthingtonufactory 1 located in our midst, a monument to the united action of our people andto the" credit of the club, That it is not now here is no fault of ours. In fact, I believe It will yet come, These men are high minded and. honorable and their basin fr equal that of our prss nc large manufacturing enterprise and the men who take its management will be an addition to pur already large number of public spirited and Intelligent business men. We were instrumental la obtain, ing for our people lower street car fares.

We nave celled the attention in a a most orcilble manner cf the rail' foads centering here to our inadequate depot privilege. If nothing ting tibia has jet resulted from our efforts in this I cannot fciit 'believe impression i.mdiby us cjifltyi ralroad.fflclaU' lrlU jlpen city, will see. to Lt that the seed wa watered until noes ta root ana grow into something that. shall dlvpltice the present miserable depot buildings blotches on the (face oJf our city. This much for tihe past.

A3 TO THE FUTUBli. The great good cf tne Commercial club Is yet to be. We may not cre ate opportunities for doing great things, but they will come. When they do the Commercial club will be here to meet tliem. Then the great good of our Commercial club will he seen, Without the opportunity for the dafag cf great things, It yet Can be forceful tor good 'all the time.

As In the pust, we must he conservative end commend to our peo iplecnly rwfaat I good. To this end we should have a large attendance let Btif meetings and a full, and free yUoutwlon ef all questions presented.presented. The size of our regular monthly, meetings is a mitter largely within the con'trol of the ptcrgram comaniHtee, Interesting questions for discussion with a good array of speakers will certainly reiult In an increase tff the attendance. I am an Advocate of enlarge mem bershlp, 1 am told that the mern twrnbtp ot (he Indianapolis Com; merclal club ts upwards of 1,200, Their dues are fifty cents per month. I believe our SI a month dues keep many out of our club who would be glad to Join.

It. think an effort should be. made ti increase our membership to 500 Vlth the understanding that our 'dues rtiall be reduced te fifty cents per, month as soon aa the membership reaches 300, If the li.gt due are keeping good, loyal, patriotic citizens out of our club, we should reduce them. The Fort Wayne Commercial club is here to stay. It should henceforth be one of the best institution; of the city and every person who want te work for the advancement of the lty should tie a tnenmber df lt.

There is work for every loyal citizen. In my opinion the opportunity for doing great thing for the city II at The present Is a pivotal period in the fcisWy of Fort Wayne. Upon this cluie and the loyal citizens Ot the city, every one, rests a great responsibility. Action means growth) Inaction, stagnation. It has seemed to me that we do not fully realize the situation.

Fort Wayne is now the metropolis of this part of the country. In spite ot ourselves this is true. All the territory wltlhln a radius of miles this spot should be be made suburb tt this city. The people within the circle named realize this and would gladly welcome any efforts on our part to be joined to u. The matter rests With us.

We can make Fort iFort Wayne a busy hive of trade and commerce a city of 100,000 or 200,000 people it 'we will. MUST ACT AT ONCE. If we wait umt.1 i country 'net work of electrie road connecting the smaller cities throughout this section of the state will too late. We must build eiec trill roads reaching out in every di reftlon from our beautiful city and thus, claim our own. The harvest is ready it is ours, for the gathering, Can we do itf How shall we do.

ltr First increase the size of our Commercial club to a membership of 800, then, All the hearts ot all with an enthusiasm for the 'city. A city Is what Its citizens make it This has been demonstrated by many cities that are easily called to Twenty five year ago OrandBapld had a less population tt new has more than double the number. it claim over 800,000 Inhabitants. Bochester is not so favorably located for the making ot a big city as Fort Wayne. It is an inland city only seventy miles from Buf falo and has ho special advantages. When I look at its great growth I can but feel that with the lame kind of enthusiasm and public spirit among it citizens Fort Wayne can surpass woulot not minimis the efforts of fndifiduaiA In tha bulldingjip jr tVWyVbut 1 Hit tW th.V, forts of Individuals should be supr plemented by aa oiganjzatlon like this; one that unites into harmonious working force al the patriotic elements of the city that focuses tha of all to the welfare ot the community, In" a thousand ways such a club can do good work; It must not be forgotten that In the building up of cities as in all things lse in this life piize are bestowed reward of merit. The the active And the untiring gain them.

Our neighboring cities are not asleep, Bluffton, Huntington, Lo gAnrport and Lafayette, in fact, nearly every city of 3,000 population and over in the sfte has its commercial club looking to Us ad vancement. We had an object leBson this past week from the one city in the state (hatwe had been led to believe was sleeping. We weri told Lafayette bad magnificent banks and hoarded wealth but lacked enterprise. When 250 of its business men with two elegant' bands of music came unheralded and uninvited and paraded our streets simply to invite us to a carnival in that city we lost Our breath, Who of us ever saw such enterprise. AN OBJECT, LESSON.

We have had eerUennlal celebrations and carnivals in Fort Wayne, but who ever dreamed of BOO of our citizens helping to carry them on, All who work, all who contribute to enterprises of the kind in Fori; Wayne would not make a procession half as largo as Lafayette sent to us last week. We take off our hats to Lafayette and congratulate her. She is on tho right track end will get there. This showing of Lafayette emphasizes better thin anything I can say the importance of vigilance and untiring effort on, our' part. We Are Apt te weary and become discouraged unless we see the Immediate results of our work.

We should not expect quick returns and all we do we should be willing to do and to wait. We must expect to take up many thing that to discuss many things that seem unimportant, to thrash much Straw that has nothing in it and much more that has little in it. It i so in every important thing in life. The farmer plows hi ground in the fall, han rowi it and then drills in his wheat and Walt many weary months for the grain to grow and ripen. At last when he has harvested and thrashed tt he finds be has much straw and chaff and very little grain.

If as a commercial club we get large heaps ot straw and chaff and very little tht can call golden grain we saould not be discouraged rememberllg that such it the, 1 ati ot all human effort.) i congratulate genuemen, on the past success club 1 1(l(thak you for the honor, you have givauauv in mitAius ur yvu yici, denVf, ask your indulgence JA te.wprk, of the yearjand beg of youthat you show thiOame untiring patriotism as has (haracteiized your past Work, Let ts thl year bring the Fort Wayne CSmmeroial club ttf the high watp mark, I thank you, STANDING COMMITTEES, At the close of hi ajdrese President Eandall announced the following committees Commutes on City Inreet S.
