Colonial Drive Orlando, Florida -a, ST 144 Feb. i960 By Star Bureau MELBOURNE BEACH A revolutionary new process of using colors to help children learn to read will be demonstrated in Brevard County this month by its English originator. The method reduces the learning of alphabet sounds from the present old-fashioned time scale of three years to an effort of only weeks. THE revolutionary technique will get a first-hand introduction in the county next week by its innovator, Dr. Caleb Gattegno of Reading, England.

The professor here at the invitation of Brevard School Supt. B. Frank Brown will conduct color workshops Feb. 12-14 at several county elementary schools. He is currently in New York City, where he is conducting similar workshops.

FLORIDA educators have a far view of the learning by color method. In Brevard some teachers have experimented with it but not on a controlled basis. "Most all current school programs anywhere take three years now to cover alphabet sounds that are taught elementary grade pupils," said Gemini Elementary School Principal Helen Outlaw at Melbourne Beach. "Dr. Gattegno's words-in-color approach stresses the alphabet sounds by color.

Present programs teach whole word methods where as the words in color program teaches basic sounds in a period of 12 to 14 weeks." THE PROFESSOR will be at the Fairglen School in Cocoa Monday with an evening session for school administrators and faculties. On Tuesday, he will be at the Capeview School in Cocoa Beach, the Co-, quina School at Titusville and Audubon School at Merritt Island. He will conduct an all-day first grade boys class at the Gemini School Wednesday. IN COUNTY JUDGE'S No Medicinal Value In 'Pot' As a noted psychiatrist has said, "You don't need drugs to give you an awareness of the wonders of the world. All you need is rapt attention to your surroundings." The rumor has gotten around that smoking marijuana improves one's creative and artistic ability, but scientific observation fails to a ntiate such a claim.

SINCE THE use of marijuana does not cause a physical dependence, there are no torturous withdrawal symptoms when its use is discontinued. That, however, does not eliminate the problems of psychological dependence. Chronic users of the drug who give it up' relapse about as often as users of heroin. PSYCHOLOGICAL de- pendence of any kind is an indication of a serious personality problem that can be solved only when it is determined what it is that is really bothering the victim consciously, subconsciously or both. For such a determination, expert psychiatric help may be necessary, ESTATE OF ALFRED WOODRICH, NOTICE TO CREDITORS S0 HAVING SAID s-PATE AGAINST You and each of vou are hereby notified and required to file any claims and demands which you, or either of you, may have against said estate In the office of Hon.

Segrest and Eleanor Segrest, Dated this 1st day ef February, 1968. THE VALLEY NATIONAL BANK OF ARIZONA Phoenix, Arliona BvtPaut Richardson PAUL RICHARDSON Assistant Vice President Loan Service Center Newspaper Enterprise Association Marijuana has become one of the most controversial subjects of the day. Unlike morphine, cocaine and the barbiturates, it has no medicinal value.

It causes psychologic dependence rather than true addiction or physical dependence. A DERIVATIVE of the hemp plant, Cannabis saliva, it has been known for many centuries under such names as hashish, bhang and dagga. Although traffic in the drug is illegal, control is. difficult, because the hemp grows so readily in all parts of the world. The smoke from cigarettes containing marijuana, when inhaled, is irritating and frequent use causes chronic bronchitis.

IT ALSO affects the brain, but not in any consistent or predictable way. This effect, when it is felt, occurs within a few minutes and may last for 10 to 12 hours. Some habitual users of this drug develop mental disease, but it is possible that persons with a tendency to develop a psychosis are more easily lured into using the drug than are normal persons. THE FACT that many young persons today are trying marijuana just for kicks is a sad commentary on their motivation toward more worthwhile goals and their total lack of inner resources.
