This is another item in the re-issue of a monaural set of the complete Well Tempered Clavier by Miss Tureck, famed in Europe as the "High Priestess of Bach." They have to be taken carefully but they are outstanding interpretations and sure to delight Bach enthusiasts.

The piano tone, too, seems a bit better than in the previous re-issues in the set. Mi3s Tureck's own notes are non-technical but coolly pedantic, somewhat in the manner of her performances. BERLIOZ phonie Fantastique. London Symphony, Colin Davis conducting. Philips PHS 930-191 (Mono PHM 500-101).

If you ignore the romantic silliness of the story tacked onto this unusual piece you will have a most enjoyable experience. Berlioz was unrivaled for pure brilliance of blended tonal timbre and variety for want of a better word), and Davis' reading is a vibrant, blazing display of orchestral oppu-lence that never sacrifices subtlety for massed sound. One of the finest performances of the "fantastique" I have ever heard. Those who heard the handsome young French flutist when he played with the Green Bay Symphony a few seasons ago will remember his breathtaking technique and smooth, velvety Put him with the finest chamber orchestra in the world to perform these sparkling numbers and you have a virtually unbeatable combination. Mackerras leads a sparkling, gay performance highlighted by the "Petit Riens" ballet music. Another excellent addition to Vanguard's "Everyman Classics" re issue label. String Quintets in Flat Major, 611, and Major, 593. Griller Quartet with William Primrose, violist. Vanguard VRS 191 SD (Mono SRV 191).

Hopefully, this Everyman Classics re-issue will restore the Griller Quartet to the status it enjoyed a few years ago when the recording was first distributed. Balanced performances in warm, full sound and fine presence are given a slightly heavier texture by the addition of Primrose's viola. The drive and sparkle of the playing are exceptional. J.S. Charles Bressler, tenor, with the New York Chamber Soloists. Decca DL 9 US. Here is an unusual and imaginative album in brilliant sound. Anna was J.S. Bach's second wife, and her "notebook" is a collection of clavier pieces and songs by her husband, his sons and others (some unknown) which have been culled for material to comprise this recording.

The Gene Pitney Show (Various Artists, Musicor).

Top attractions are Pitney on "Backstage" and the Platters doing "I Love You 1,000 Times." The Genius of Anthony New-ley (London). The trouble with Anthony's genius is it doesn't come across on record. "Out of Sight" (Motion Picture Soundtrack, Decca).
