Sunday, April 27, 2003 www.postcrescent.com UOu MB LLPs Reppert set for induction into College Football Hall of Fame i I t-, 'V' Lawrence University photo SCOTT REPPERT, a former star running back at Lawrence University, was the leading NCAA Division III rusher for three straight years. He gained 4,442 yards from 1979 to 1982. "I practiced and played as hard as anyone you'd want to meet," says Reppert AP photo SOO-YUN RANG putts for birdie on the ninth hole during the second round of the LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Championship on Saturday in Stockbridge, Ga. Couples remains in front The Associated Press (Fred Couples birdied five of the last seven holes Saturday for a five-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Mark Calcavecchia after three rounds of the PGA Houston Open in Humble, Texas. The 43-year-old Couples, bidding for his first win in five years, rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-four 18th hole to get to 16-under 200 after 54 holes.

He has led or shared the lead after all three days. Calcavecchia, tied with Couples heading into play Saturday, shot a 68 with five birdies and a single bogey to get to 15-under. Batrd and fullbacks Mark Stevens and John Marquinski. "Anything that's ever been good in sports happened because somebody was helping me, and anything that happened that was bad was because I wasn't prepared," Reppert said. "There was always someone helping me along the way.

(Former coach Ron Roberts) built an organization that was good for me. (Tight end) Pat Schwanke was there and took a lot of attention away from me, and Dean Walsh and Ron Roberts Jr. as quarterbacks definitely took a lot of attention away from me. It just made my job a whole lot easier." Coach Roberts remembers Reppert as just a "real good person to have on the team. I le had tremendous balance.

When I first started working with Scott, he had been successful at West with the dive play off the split-T. We backed him up into an I formation more, and in practice, I used to grab his pants and hold him when the ball was snapped, and he'd be churning like a car with its wheels off the ground. Then, I'd let him go and he'd hit the hole." Former quarterback Dean Walsh called Reppert "the toughest kid on our team. He was never afraid to get hit and he was a great teammate. "He didn't have world-class sprinter speed, but his speed was very good.

He could go from zero to top speed faster than anyone I've ever seen. We used to run a play, called the left lead draw and I bet he gained half to more than half of his yardage on that one play." Schwanke played with and against Reppert during their careers in high school and at Lawrence. "We got to know each other as sophomores going to Ron Robert's football camp and we became pretty good friends even though he was from West and I was from Menasha," said Schwanke, now the head football coach at Appleton East. "As long as I've been coaching, the one thing you can't coach is what Scott has and that's instinct. The instinctual abilities he had made him belter than anyone.

When he got to the hole, he had great vision, lie could read blocks going full speed and he could stutter-step to set up blocks. The only other one I've seen like that is Brad Olson." Olson, who played under Schwanke at East, went on to break Reppert's rushing record at LU with 5,325 yards, although Reppert still holds the record for attempts in a career with 807. By Tom Goff Post-Crescent staff writer When the mysterious FedEx package arrived Monday at Scott Reppert's home in Belvedere, 111., and he didn't know, who the sender was, he was curious.

When he opened it, he was in shock. Inside, a letter informed the Appleton native and former Lawrence University star running back that he would be inducted into the National Football Foundation's Divisional Hall of Fame Class for 2003. "I read the letter and I'm like, 'This is Reppert said after the news was made public Thursday. "Rick Peterson, the sports information director when I played and now the associate director of public affairs, once said, 'What would you think if that ever happened, and I said, 'Rick, I would drop I can't help but think people like Rick and Joe Vanden Acker (LU's current SID), had their hands in making these people aware of who I am for a long time and it finally bared fruit." Fortunately, Reppert didn't drop dead. But the good news did take him totally by surprise.

"I'm happy, but at the same time it's not something you planned for," said Reppert, a three-time Little All-Ameri-can at Lawrence. "All I can say is that I practiced and played as hard as anyone you'd want to meet. It just so happened all the things were at the right place at the right time. "I'd like to say that I'm the greatest football player than ever lived, but I've got no illusions. I'm a good football player, but there are thousands of guys who were as good as I was.

It's just they weren't in the right place at the right time." Reppert will be Lawrence's first inductee and the first from the Midwest Conference into the College Football Hall of Fame. Enshrinement ceremonies will be Aug. 8-9 in South Bend, Ind. Although Reppert will be inducted into a select group of six former Division I-AA, II, III and NAIA players and three coaches, he will be enshrined at the same time as the 11 players and two coaches in the Division I-A Class with such notables as Barry Sanders, Joe Theismann, Ricky Bell and former University of Iowa coach Haydcn Fry. Since 1996, 55 players and 23 coaches have been selected for induction into the divisional class of the Hall of Fame.

To be considered for enshrinement, a player must first be nominated by a COLLEGE Name Wendy Woelfel, Chilton St. Nortert track Update Won the shot Invitational on Cathy Collins, Shawano Lakeland Softball Leads Muskies average and a Sports Illustrated focused as much on Reppert's community service as his football ability. A standout in the classroom as well, Reppert earned academic all-America honors in 1981. Since graduation, he has lived in Minnesota, Idaho, Tennessee and most recently Illinois, and has made an impact in every community he's been. Reppert holds a teaching certificate in secondary education.

As the general manager of Aramark Uniform Services in Rockford, 111., Reppert is involved in Junior Achievement. He had a tryout with the Chicago Bears as a free agent in 1983, played in a few exhibition games, but was released in September. He also played for the London Ravens of the European League in 1985 and 1986, but a serious knee injury ended his playing career. Though he was a Bear for a while, he's still a big Green Bay Packers fan. "Illinois, especially Northern Illinois where I am, is a great place to live, but it's not Wisconsin," he said.

Reppert is the first one to tell you that whatever he accomplished in football, he didn't do alone. After he had a good game, he would always lavish praise on his offensive linemen: tackles Ken Urbanski and Pete Carlson, guards Chris Tadych, Gary Van Berkel and John Linnemanstons, center Greg member of the NFF or by athletic directors, coaches or sports information directors. A candidate must have received first-team all-America recognition by a selector that is recognized as a major selector by the NCAA or NAIA. A player becomes eligible for consideration by the Foundation's Honors Court 10 years after his last year of intercollegiate football played. While football achievements are paramount, his post-football record as a citizen is also weighed.

Reppert, who was nominated by Lawrence's sports information staff, easily met all the criteria. He was the leading Division III rusher for three years in a row, gaining 4,442 yards during his career from 1979 to 1982. He set 22 School records in his career and led the Vikings to a 33-5 record, including a playoff berth in 1981, the only one in school history. Reppert ran for 100 or more yards in game 23 times and 200 or more yards in a game five times in his career. At age 43, Reppert has been out of school for 20 years, twice the required amount of time, and he has always been involved in community service.

Beginning as a junior at Appleton West High School, Reppert began working with special need students at Highlands Elementary School. His second shot on the 562-yard, par-five first hole landed in the bunker to the left of the green. His next shot failed to escape the trap, but his second attempt out of the sand hit the flagstick and dropped in for a birdie to put him at 12-under. A six-footer for par on No. 3 missed by a foot for a bogey, but he recovered by rolling in an eight-footer for birdie on No.

A birdie at No. 9 kept him at even par for the day, but then he roared back with consecutive birdies at 12, 13 and 14 to regain a share of the lead. Webb, Wie in the spotlight: Karrie Webb shot a second-round 66 to take the lead in the LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Championship at Stockbridge, Ga.

Thirteen-year-old Michelle Wie, followed around by the largest gallery on the course, made the cut in her second straight tour event by enduring a 10-hour, 31-hole day. Wie completed the rain-delayed first round in the morning by playing 13 holes, finishing with an even-par 72, then went straight to No. 1 and got started on another 18. The eight-grader had a 70 in the afternoon not bad considering she arrived from Hawaii on Thursday, only had time for one practice round on an unfamiliar course, then had to get through a grueling day. "1 made some stupid mistakes," said Wie, who finished an astonishing ninth in the first LPGA major of the year.

"I made some really good putts, but I should have played better." Webb is seeking her first victory of 2002. She hasn't finished higher than ninth in four events. Lietzke takes lead: Bruce Lietzke had an eagle early in the second round to take a one-stroke lead over Dana Quigley in the rain-delayed Champions Tour Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Ga. Lietzke opened with a two-under 70 in the morning and added an afternoon 65 for a nine-under 135 total. V- it with a team-high season.
