PREP SPORTS SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 2001 D-5 NorthEast shows depth in winning invitational and East programs before this season. "It's great having a team where there are so many guys to choose from to put in an invitational." Having established itself as the team to beat in the Fox Valley Association, getting to the state meet provides the ultimate motivation for NorthEast. That is not the only source of motivation, though. "To put this in the perspective of state, we've got a lot of work to do," Stepanski said. "The conference is something we've never won, and that's motivation for the guys, too.

Winning that is not a given. We've got to perform that day." Performing well on Saturday was NeenahMenasha's Natan Pheil, who etched his name into the meet record book twice -tying the record of :55.41 in the 100-yard individual medley set in 1997 by Tom Shane of New Berlin Eisenhower and breaking the 50-yard backstroke record of :26.09 by NeenahMenasha's Ryan Micale in 1997 with a time "I've been doing a lot of hard training, and to be able to swim fast is nice," Pheil said. In both races, Pheil fended off challenges from long-time competitor Kyle Hawley of NorthEast, beating him by one-half length in both events. "We're kind of but we have a lot of respect for each other," Pheil said of Hawley. "It's always good to have someone push you, especially when it's him.

We have had this thing going with each other these past few years. I think we bring out the best in each other." NeenahMenasha's Jon Fox won the diving handily, topping runner-up Mike Reid of NeenahMenasha by nearly 90 points. "There are not a whole lot of guys pushing me this year," Fox said. "To push myself, I just try to go for the records. That's how I motivate myself." Fox capped his solid day by, hitting his final dive, a double twisting, one-and-a-half.

"I've been struggling with that, but today I just set it up like I was supposed to and put it in real nice," Fox said. Before he could celebrate, though, Appleton NorthEast figuratively ran its fingers through his birthday cake's frosting by winning the Rocket Sprint Invitational, relegating host NeenahMenasha to a second-place finish.

NorthEast won the meet with 671 points, and NeenahMenasha had 562 Vi. Ash-waubenon, Appleton WestKim-berly and Oshkosh West finished third through fifth, respectively, while Oshkosh North took seventh. The NorthEast squad, as it did seven days earlfer at the Ash- BOYS' SWIMMING waubenon Invitational, showed it has an ample supply of quality swimmers by having at least two swimmers or relay teams finish in the top six in six of the invita-tional's 12 events. "This meet allows more entries, and you get three relay teams, which you don't get at any of the other invites," NorthEast coach Scott Stepanski said. "It shows just how deep we are.

In a couple of heats today, our and relays fought it out. A couple of times our relay beat our relay, which shows that those kids are really coming on." "With the Appleton East guys, it helps a lot," NorthEast swimmer Mike Natali said of the increased strength of the team since the merger of the North Tyriver leads Indians past Papermakers New London wins its invitational mm i ifr- T- if Post-Crescent photo by Kirk Wagner KAUKAUNA'S JUSTIN GEITNER pins Racine Park Nathan Kleba in a 140-pound wrestling match during the Cheesehead Invitational on Saturday. CIIAfidP: Vanevenhoven wins another title in Cheesehead By Alan Hamari For The Post-Crescent KIMBERLY Oshkosh West freshman Whitney Tyriver made quite a name for herself on Saturday night. Tyriver scored 16 points and didn't miss a shot from the field as she came off the bench to help power the Indians to a 58-35 victory in a Fox Valley Association matchup against the Kimberly Papermakers. "She was a key for getting us into the game," West coach Ter-ri Schumacher said.

"She just did a good job of penetrating and drawing fouls." After the Papermakers took a 12-8 lead early in the second quarter, Tyriver connected on two free throws to cut the lead to two. Kimberly's Alicia Siebers then opened the lead to three by converting on the front end of a trip to the free-throw line, but Tyriver answered right back, slicing through the Paper-makers defense to cut the lead to one. That basket started a 12-2 run for the Indians, which Tyriver capped off with another drive through the lane. Tyriver scored eight points in the second quarter, going three-for-three from the field and leading West to a 30-19 halftime lead. "My confidence was up tonight," Tyriver said.

"When I came in, I wanted to score." Tyriver may have led the West offense in the first half, but the Indians made their presence felt on the defensive end, snatching rebounds from the outstretched hands of the Papermakers. One of the key players for West was 6-foot-4 Nicole Almberg, who snagged several rebounds over a much shorter Kimberly team. New London took the championship of its Bulldogs Cutler Classic invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. Three New London wrestlers won their weight classes in the eight-team event. Aaron Kueck decisioned Brian Ostertag of Oshkosh North (140 pounds), Paul Kilde pinned Appleton North's Reid Jome (189) and Cole Konrad improved to 21-2 for the season with a 3-0 decision over Southern Door's Adam Cochart (275).

Pell; the 1999 WIAA Division 2 state champion at 119 who missed all of last year due to injury, picked up a pair of awards. He won the outstanding-pinner award with three falls in a combined three minutes, 44 seconds.

He was also voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler. Mater Dei, which has won three individual and two team tournaments this year and is 15-0 in dual meets, advanced eight to the finals and seven won. Wildcats winning titles were Craig Macke 103), Aaron Scott (119), Dustin Nosko (125), Blake Maurer (130), Matt Con-kling (135), Chad Raben (145) and Eric Dewig (152). The only loser was Neil Reddington (171). "To come out of this tournament with seven champions, I didn't think that would happen.

I'm really proud," Mater Dei coach Mike Goebel said. "After (Friday) night, there was a little pressure, but the kids got adjusted. They're a good group." Mater Dei became the third out-of-state team to win the tournament, joining St. Edwards of Ohio in 1999 and Apple Valley, last year. "It was similar to the other years," Kaukauna coach Steve McDaniel said.

"The idea for the Cheesehead is to bring in the top teams from outside the state to meet some of the best teams in our state. This time we had two No. Is in Luxemburg-Casco (No. 1 in Division 2) and Mineral Point (No. 1 in Division 3)." i nmm i HAGUE OVFMUL Osh.

The lack of second-chance shots hurt the Papermakers, since they weren't having much success with their first-chance opportunities. Kimberly went just five-for-15 in the first half, and finished ll-for-38 (29 percent) from the field in the game, "We know that we have to work hard," Kimberly coach Troy Cullen said. "We know we have to rebound better and we know we have to execute on offense better." The Papermakers cut the Indians' lead to nine early in the third quarter, but Tyriver had another solid quarter, scoring six points and boosting West to a 44-27 lead entering the fourth. While Tyriver found success by driving against Kimberly, Almberg used her height to her advantage by posting up in the paint. Almberg had 15 points in the game and went six-for-nine from the field.

FVA GIRLS Paton hit her head hard on the ground, spinning with the ball to get away from two defenders, and she left the game. "It was something that you wouldn't have expected," said West senior Brittany Wickre, who scored 10 points. "It was an interesting game." East came out faster in the first quarter. Then Fieck scored five points and added an assist in a third-quarter run that put the Terrors in a 31-18 hole. "The third quarter hurt us," Wickre said.

"We dug ourselves a hole that we couldn't get out of." Both teams stepped it up in the fourth quarter. Wickre made West's only three-pointer and Hansen made two shots in a row as the Terrors scored 19 points. West's Lizzie Doucette also scored six of her 10 points in the final period. "We got the fire toward the end, and it just seemed like it was too late," Wickre said. The Patriots scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including six from Paton.

"I was searching for the right combination down the stretch," coach Paton said. "Girls were going in and out and getting upset, and getting back in. "That's just part of the game, trying to find the right combination down the stretch." Patriots never trail in victory over Terrors The arrangement for Mader Dei to compete this year came through the joint efforts of twin brothers Don and Ron Straus. Don is Kaukauna's trainer and Ron is the trainer for Mader Dei. "They got it started, then we brought in an official, Tom Jankowski, from that area last, year and he went back and said, 'You've got to come to this McDaniel said.

Besides Mater Dei, Stoughton was the only other team to win more than one championship. The Vikings won at 189 with Proctor, 160 with Iverson and at 171 in overtime with Peter Moe. MQos leads United to win By Jodi Rintelman Post-Crescent staff writer The Appleton East girls' bai ketball team never fell behind, but Appleton West kept it close as the Patriots beat the Terrors 49-43 in a Fox Valley Association game at West on Saturday.

"You can't ever count anybody out in one of these games," East coach Greg Paton said. "We weren't comfortable with any kind of a lead. "Plus, it was real physical. In the past we haven't responded well to physical games like that, and we kept our composure a little better tonight." West's Lauren Hansen led both teams with 17 points, including six in a fierce fourth quarter, but she fouled out with 4:03 left. After Hansen's early fourth-quarter basket put the Terrors within two points at 33-31, East's Mikken Paton made a three-pointer, stopping West's late-game surge.

"Before the game (coach Paton) said that we hadn't won two games in a row in two years and that pretty much pumped us up," Mikken Paton said. "And then he was like, 'Mikken, we're going to run. If you're open, shoot East also had foul trouble, losing Amy Fieck, who led the Patriots with 11 points, with 3:56 left. Then with :57 left, Mikken Brian Mjos scored twice, including the go-ahead goal, as Appleton United defeated Tom-ah 4-1 in a nonconference hockey game at the Appleton Family Ice Center on Saturday. Mjos scored the first goal, assisted by Jonas Benzler and Josh Blair.

In the second period, Tomah tied the score, but Mjos came back with another, assisted by Blair and Paul Melchiori, to put the United (7-5-2) ahead.
