"They were punting, and here comes the fliers, so I pushed Ty to get out of the way," Favre said. "There's no room on the sideline there, so I ended up pushing Ty right into the fliers. I remember Ty getting rolled up under the bench and us laughing about it.

Isn't it funny the things you remember?" Favre said he didn't recall anything else about the game. "We scored three points, so there's probably not much to remember," he said. Ready to roll: Nick Luchey is anxious to get on the field, whether it's at fullback, tight end or special teams. Offensive coordinator Tom Rossley plans to give Favre "10 to 12 plays" in the Hall of Fame Game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The preseason opener for both teams kicks off at 7 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. "We'd like to get a drive early, get a touchdown and get (Favre) out of there," Rossley said. "Kevin Barry should be fine at right tackle. Spriggs probably will be the guy at left tackle.

I don't know. I'm a little concerned right there." Spriggs, a seventh-year free agent, and Barry are expected to start at the tackles in place of Chad Clifton and Mark Tausch-er, who are recovering from pelvic and knee injuries, respectively. Offensive line coach Larry Beightol thinks Spriggs and Barry will be OK, but he doesn't want to put Favre in any unnecessary risk. "I wouldn't put (Spriggs and Barry) in the Hall of Fame just yet," Post-Crescent photo By Dan Powers HANK STRAM waves to fans from his wheelchair as he is announced to the crowd during the start of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony Sunday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. i -a i 9 hit strain inauc non Li Spriggs HEALTHY: Youngsters get a chance From D-1 only expected to take 10 to 12 snaps.

Most of the starters should be gone before the end of the first quarter to ensure their health, and, in part, so Sherman can continue to evaluate his young talent. Sherman said his rookies are ready to see their first NFL action. "Idealistically, I'd like to say I sense that," Sherman said. "I think when we get out there and we're playing in this environ- ment and go through the Hall of Fame, it really hits them that they're not in college anymore. This is the National Football League and it's a Monday night game, with all the hoopla that comes with that." With roster spots and playing time to fight for, it's a safe bet the rookies are taking this game pretty seriously.

"There's no question. It's our first NFL game," rookie linebacker Nick Barnett said. "The whole team is excited about the game, but it does have an added special meaning for us." Barnett may not have to worry about making the final 53-man roster, but most of the other rookies do. Rookie receivers Carl Ford and first-year player Antonio Chatman have lit up training camp, but nothing would do more to solidify their spots than carrying over that success into a game. "It gives me more opportunity to get noticed on the field," Ford said.

"I get more opportunities to make plays and I'm going to try to take advantage of it." With so many veterans on the sideline, Sherman is going to have no choice but to take a hard look at some of the younger players who might not be seeing as much action if the team were healthy. "It's frustrating with injuries. There are guys you want to look at who aren't out here," Sherman said. "Ford is doing a nice job. Chatman is doing a nice job, better than I expected him to do.

Karsten Bailey has been fairly consistent." Ford and Chatman may be the biggest focus for the Packers. In addition to looking for backup receivers, Sherman also needs to find a kickoff and punt returner. Ford and Chatman have been auditioning throughout camp. "I'm excited about it," Ford said. "I know how I do at that will be a big part of whether I make the team." Dylan B.

"But they brought me here to play in the offense more than anything. I'm working (at tight end) because they want to give defenses a few different looks to prepare for, so it's something to be excited about." Luchey, a fifth-year pro, is competing with veteran William Henderson to see who will be the starting fullback.

So far, it has been one of the better battles in training camp. Luchey weighed 285 pounds in the off-season but is at his playing weight of 272. "I'm new here, so I guess my weight was a big deal, but I always get to where I have to be with no problem," he said. Roster update: The Packers signed Luther Broughton, a 6-foot, 255 tight end, after Joey Knapp was waivedinjured with a hamstring problem. Broughton, who was assigned No.

Injury update: Players listed as out for tonight's game, in addition to Clifton and Tauscher: WR Donald Driver (hamstring); WR Robert Ferguson (tailbone); LS Jorg Heckenbach (kidneys); TE David Martin (hamstring); Darren Sharper (shoulder); DT Steve Warren (back); RB Lamar Smith (knee); DT James Lee (back); RB Reggie White (knee); RB Adam Tate (knee) and Reggie Coleman (hip). is a record with the Chiefs, how he won three AFL titles, how his 1969 Chiefs upset the heavily favored Vikings in Super Bowl rv, how five players from his teams were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and how Stram's use of the moving pocket, two-tight-end offense and stack defense changed the game. But this day was about relationships. That was made clear when Stram was wheeled away from the stage and found himself immediately swarmed by loved ones. The crowd around Stram was so thick that Lanier served as a blocking back so friends, family and teammates could make it through to his chair. Holub, the Texas-born former linebackercenter a man who wore jeans, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, and still looks as if he could lead a mean sweep -wiped away tears as he leaned over to offer congratulations.

At one point, Rudnay gathered his old mates into a tight circle, as if ready to call a play and break the huddle, and they were all soon beaming with smiles. "No coach could have asked for a more dedicated, loyal and talented group of people, and if there were time, I would single out each one of you," Stram said. "Someone said that friends are angels in the skies. If this is true, I have been surrounded by angels for most of my life. Many of you angels are here today.

I thank you for your attendance, your support and the loyal friendship you have provided over the years." "I wear a Super Bowl ring on this hand, and I wear a Hall of Fame ring on this one. I know I wouldn't have either one of them if it wasn't for this guy, Hank Stram." LEN DAWSON, Hall of Fame presenter for Hank Stram "I wear a Super Bowl ring on this hand, and I wear a Hall of Fame ring on this one," Dawson said, holding his hands in front of him. "I know I wouldn't have either one of them if it wasn't for this guy, Hank Stram." Stram was joined by his family, including his wife, Phyllis, who wiped tears from her eyes as her husband soaked in the applause. He was also joined by former players such as Budde, Hall of Famers Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier, Ed Podolak, E.J. Holub and Jack Rudnay.

Once young and athletic, now aging and bearing the scars of battle, these men turned Hall of Fame weekend into a Chiefs reunion. "It's a great moment for all of us," Rudnay said. "This was a long time coming and everyone wanted to be a part of it." The history books detail how Stram compiled a 124-76-10 SUNDAY'S FINAL PRO GOLF SCORES Furyk holds off Woods in Buick By Ivan Carter The Kansas City Star CANTON, Ohio Health problems prevented Hank Stram from walking to the podium and delivering a live speech Sunday afternoon. But that didn't stop the greatest coach in Kansas City Chiefs history from moving the crowd inside Canton's Fawcett Stadium. Stram officially joined the ranks of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, an honor long overdue for a man who coached in two of the first four Super Bowls.

The look of pure happiness on Stram's face said the wait was well worth it. Sitting in a wheelchair, surrounded by friends, family, peers and former players, the 80-year-old Stram expressed his appreciation through a previously taped speech that was interspersed with highlights from Stram's glory days guiding the Chiefs. When it was over, Stram received the day's longest and most emotional standing ovation. "That was the thing I will always remember about this day," said former Chiefs great Ed Budde. "Here you have former Raiders, players from other teams, coaches and people who might not have even seen those Chiefs teams play, and they were all up giving him a standing ovation.

I think everyone sensed how much this means to him." The Packers are impressed with rookie Brennan Curtin's play at left tackle, but the 6-foot-9, 315-pound rookie from Notre Dame strained a pectoral muscle earlier this week. Woods carded a 66 in the final round to finish at 19 under, tying for second place with Chris DiMarco, Geoff Ogilvy and Briny Baird. One of Woods' errant shots hit a fan, who needed three stitches to close a cut on his head. Furyk played mistake-free golf other than a three-putt bogey from 26 feet on No.

11 and missing a three-foot putt for birdie at the par-five 16th. He birdied the round's first two holes to extend the one-stroke lead he began the day with. When other players mounted challenges on the back nine, Furyk kept them at bay with birdies at Nos. 13 and 14. "Every time I made a mistake, like I did on 1 1 and 16, I came right back and hit good golf shots to put it away," Furyk said.

"I'm proud of that." Furyk's 68-66-65-68 performance proved that missing the cut at the British Open two weeks ago was not a source of concern for his game. "Early in the week, my ball-striking was mediocre at best, but I did what I needed to do with my short game to score," he said.
