The Rattlers scored all the runs they needed to win the game in the bottom of the second, thanks to four errors by the Cougars. All four of the runs were unearned. Wisconsin's Justin Leone led the offensive charge with a double, a triple, and two RBI. With the help from his defense and some much-needed offense, Putz evened his record on the season at 2-2.

Working with his pitching coach, Rafael Chaves, and catcher Juan Alcala helped Putz stay in control. "Our pitching coach and I have been working on some mechanics the last week or two," Putz said. "Today, I just felt really good, and our catcher called a good game." In the crowd were Putz's parents. His father videotaped the game, and this was the first time his mother had seen him pitch professionally. "It was nice having my parents here," Putz said.

"They drove into town last night, and that just made this game extra special." By Joshua Starrier Post-Crescent staff writer GRAND CHUTE Most of the fans arriving for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers' doubleheader Saturday arrived late in the first game. Still, they were able to see a part of team history. Rattlers pitcher J.J. Putz threw the first no-hitter in the six-year history of the Rattlers in the first game, which they won 6-1 over Kane County. Wisconsin lost the second game 5-0.

In the first game, Putz gave up one run in the seventh inning, walking the bases loaded and then walking in a run. But he had enough energy left to get the no-hitter. "There were nerves," Putz said. "I was tired, and I was just full of adrenaline. I just didn't know what to do." Putz appeared to be in control of the game right from the start, inducing a double-play grounder after walking the first batter.

He then retired the next 16 batters, including four strikeouts, going into the seventh inning. "Toward the end, he just got a little tired. "That's the first time I've seen a no-hitter with a run scored where that team didn't commit any errors." The Rattlers defense made some spectacular "Our position guys really came through with some huge plays," Putz said. "I have to tip my hat to those guys." Ruben Castillo made a diving stop at shortstop behind second base to throw out a runner at first base, and Kris Gundrum ran down three balls in right field that looked like they were going to drop for extra bases. "Defense always is a key when AL run-scoring doubles off Dave Mlicki (0-5) to give Chicago a 2-1 lead.

"We only scored two runs, and to get a win with two runs is unbelievable," said Jeff Abbott, who also doubled in the fifth. "I credit the pitching today. We just gave (Eldred) barely enough and he did what he had to do." Orioles 3, Rangers 1 At Baltimore, Mike Mussina pitched a nine-hitter for his first win of the season, and Cal Ripken drove in two runs as Baltimore beat Texas for its ninth consecutive home victory. Blue Jays 6, Yankees 2 At New York, Tony Batista doubled in the go-ahead run as Toronto and David Wells beat New York. By The Associated Press After bolting to the AL's best record by pounding the opposition's pitchers, the Chicago White Sox have shown that they can win close, low-scoring games, too. Cal Eldred allowed four hits in seven innings as the White Sox won for the 10th time in 11 games, beating the Detroit Tigers 2-1 at Detroit Saturday. The White Sox (17-7) have won five straight from Detroit the past two weekends. Last week at Comiskey Park, they swept a three-game series by a combined score of 30-12. But their two wins in Detroit's new Comerica Park have come by 3-2 and 2-1 scores.

"We're going to have to win quite a few of these games if we want to at least be in contention later in the year," said Eldred, a former Milwaukee Brewer. "I think a little reality set in that eight or nine runs aren't going to be on the board every night, even though this offense is capable of that." Eldred (2-0), who pitched a two-hitter to beat Baltimore 8-2 in his last start, allowed three walks and struck out one in seven innings. Pratt, playing for the injured Piazza, had his first, career four-hit game as the Mets tied a team record with 23 hits in a 13-6 win over the Colorado Rockies at Denver on Saturday.

"I'm just glad I'm not hitting .200 anymore," said Pratt, who went four-for-five to raise his average from .238 to .346. "I don't care about the four Don't get me wrong, but last year when people tried to put pressure on me in the playoffs, I just went out and played my game." Edgardo Alfonzo also had four hits, and Derek Bell and Todd Zeile added three apiece for the Mets, who last had 23 hits in a nine-inning game on May 26, 1964, against the Chicago Cubs. When told his team tied a club record, Mets manager Bobby Valentine said, "Maybe next time we'll Do one thing. Do it well? Examples based on survey. Each dealer sets its own price.
