Just throw a little gasoline on it. That's the only way we could dry out the clay. It's 50 degrees out, so the warm weather's not going to do it. "We were trying to expedite the process." While the fire may have startled people looking into the stadium as they traveled on U.S. 41, it did the trick.

worked a little bit," Hofer said. "It helped solidify the shortstop area, but it was still a little soft." That wasn't the only interesting part of, the day for the grounds crew. Removing the tarp from the infield became an adventure with a strong wind blowing into the stadium from the north. "Normally, we can pull the tarp under ideal conditions with as few as four guys," Hofer said. "Today, I bet there was 15 of us out there.

It was a struggle just to get that done." A struggle might be a nice way to put it as one member of the grounds crew got to take a ride on the tarp due to the wind. "If it starts to blow, we normally just drop and lay on the tarp to get it on the ground so the wind can't get underneath and it up," Hofer said. "When we were rolling it up, there was an air pocket that came up and one of my assistants, Jesse Mallmann, was lifted right up in the air. "It was like he was wind surfing or something. He was about 10 or 12 feet in the air with the air pocket in there." Still, the rain wasted some work that had been done on the infield during the Rattlers' most recent road trip.

Last week, the grounds crew had stripped the infield of its dirt and reworked it to get truer bounces and make it look better. "Over the course of the season, the clay gets chewed up and develops divots," Hofer said. "We take the backs of the rake, scrape it all together and get rid of the Pro's Choice infield dirt." Once the clay is exposed, it is watered down, nail dragged and rolled. The watering and rolling WEST MICHIGAN THE GAME Pitching well doesn't necessarily ensure a victory. Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitcher Craig Anderson learned that the hard way Thursday night at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

In seven innings, the Australian struck out 10 and allowed just two hits and two runs. But it wasn't enough as the Timber Rattlers lost to the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-0 in a Midwest League baseball nama yamo' Maxim St. Pierre gave the White- caps a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a home run to left field. The Whitecaps added another run in the fifth inning on an error by third baseman Gorky Estrella on a 1 1 11 grounder by St. Pierre, and a double by Jake Anthony.

The Whitecaps scored their third and fourth runs in the ninth inning on an infield single by Ramon Santi- 1 ago, a fielder choice by David Lara, a walk to Cory Ross and a throwing error by Ariel Durango. TL The Rattlers best scoring oppor- tunity came in the eighth inning when Chris Snelling drew a one-out walk and Estrella walked. The threat ended, however, when Shawn McCorkle struck out and Snelling was thrown out attempting to steal third base. The Rattlers have rrn 1 34 stolen bases in 50 attempts. West Michigan has the Midwest League's best team ERA at 2.87. The Rattlers are sixth at 3.73. process is then repeated. The final step is putting down the new Pro's Choice infield dirt, which makes the infield look new.

"Because it was so wet, we ended with footprints and different things in the clay by shortstop," Hofer Fox Valley Lutheran's quest for a share of the Valley 8 Conference baseball championship with Clin-tonville and Hortonville is on hold until TAiesday.
