B-4 fl POST-CRESCENT, APPLETON-NEENAH-MENASHA, WIS. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1998 Kaukauna wants state to look at State 5500 intersection Home destroyed ft ku c- n-' -i Since it became 4way stop, there have been several accidents By Doug Erickson Post-Crescent staff writer KAUKAUNA Members of the Board of Public Works decided Monday to ask the state Department of Transportation to investigate ways to make the intersection of County 00 and State 55 safer. There have been three intersection-related crashes at the site since four-way stop signs were installed in September of 1996. Prior to that, only traffic on 00 stopped. In two of the crashes, vehicles traveling south on 55 failed to stop, said Assistant Police Chief Paul Morse.

In the third crash, a vehicle traveling north on 55 hit the rear of another car stopped at the intersection. Aldermen raised the safety issue following the most recent crash in January. Even though the intersection is within city boundaries, it falls under the jurisdiction of the state. The city is not recommending any particular solution. "There are always things you can do to make an intersection safer," said Morse.

"That doesn't mean it's a bad intersection." The state maintains the intersec- tion and likely would be responsible for paying for any improvements, said City Engineer Ken Schoenike. The state could decide that no remedy is needed, or that something should be done, such as installing rumble strips andor flashing lights on 55, he said. County 00 already has rumble strips and flashing lights on its stop signs. During the 17 months prior to the stop signs being installed on State 55, there were five accidents at the intersection, all involving drivers who failed to yield from the stop signs on 00. Critics say W-2 will not be enough to break cycle of poverty find themselves in a housing crisis," he said. Sen. Gwendolynne Mdore, D-Milwaukee, questioned how the prograhi could consider people "job ready" when they don't have a high school diploma. "A person would have to have had some steady or recent employment history and also have the education and training background for low-income women, in remarks prepared for the hearing. "Many of us who've been on welfare have held jobs, often combining work with public assistance," she said.

"The problem is the lack of full-time, permanent jobs, not to mention jobs that pay a living wage and insurance." She said her group is hearing from women "whose lives are being OBITUARIES destroyed by W-2." Some, she said, are driven out of school because they must find jobs. Others are told they don't qualify for W-2 because they work 5-10 hours a week, she said, and some are being told they are job ready and sent to look for work even though they have no work experience and need job training. was preceded in death by two sons: Daniel and Michael Nackers; a son-in-law, Joseph Ludwig; a brother, Russell Nackers; a sister-in-law, Elaine VanDera and his father-in-law, William VanDera.
